Talk about picky. God! Beyonce was amazing and judging by the "making of" featurette on the official website, everyone else sounds and looks amazing as well. Just be glad this is getting made and it is sticking very close to the original stage show. Of all the things that could have gone wrong with it, Beyonce doing a little riff is hardly anything to pout about. And about the whole "Beyonce sounds TOO good for Deena." I don't understand that statement. **stepping into the script now** If she didn't sound phenomenol, DREAGIRLS the group would not have gone anywhere. Something about that group stood out from every other girl group out at that time. I agree with whoever said that by the time the group sings their first song with Deena in the front, it should be all eyes on her since she becomes the focal point of the group in the eyes of the fans and the press. And about the billing of Jennifer and Anika . . . just wait. Once the buzz gets really going and more trailers come out, their names will appear. Be patient.
I don't think attention to detail is too much to ask of a multi-million dollar film. It's not about being picky. It's about doing a good job with the most important aspect of the film, the singing, around which the entire plot revolves.

And exactly when are Jennifer and Anika going to get their due? After Beyonce gets the thousand and one magazine covers and articles?
Just wait til they go on Oprah and she sits there gushing about Jamie and Beyonce and has Jenn and Anika sitting in a corner and they only get to speak for 35 seconds.
Yeah, I was like... "THIS ISN'T BEYONCE'S MOVIE!!!" But she sounded great aside from the fact.

It's a business.
Only a fool would market this movie with Jennifer Hudson as the lead. A bigger fool would make it about Anika Noni Rose.
Why don't we WAIT for the movie?
As for the whole singing thing? It's like the whole Julia Roberts dumb-ass issue going on...damned either way. People were concerned she couldn't sing it well enough. Now she's too good?
I'd rather have a good, fierce Deena and an Effie who can top that, then a thin voiced pretty faced Deena.
Remember, as b12b has said, it's about the different styles. Deen can sing pop circles around Effie. But when it comes to gospel power, Effie is it, baby!

In this "MAKING OF DREAMGIRLS: PART TWO" video all the girls get a moment to shine vocally and there a few quick scenes. It rocks. http://youtube.com/watch?v=SQjov8HVrQE&search=dreamgirls

I've seen that featurette. I'm talking about things on TV where more than a 100 online people can see it. And DREAMGIRLS itself is legendary. All 3 girls can be marketed!

DREAMGIRLS is legendary to whom, exactly?
You market based on star name. Box Office power.
But Anika sounds amazing in that clip - obviously.
Hudson sounds great, too.
I can't wait to see Anika on the big screen!
Dreamgirls looks great! I think Jennifer Hudson will do an amazing job! I can't wait!
And now, A Chorus Line comes back to Broadway.....woohoo!

First of all, it premiered during the Tonys, so it's not like that many people saw it anyway.
All 3 girls can be marketed
As the opening date draws nearer, Hudson is sure to get more press. I wouldn't hold my breath for Rose, though.
For what it's worth, I thought the trailer looked and sounded great.

I think they will get their due. Unfortunately, the studio sees only the "names" (Beyonce, Foxx) at this point. They are trying to sell it to an audience who DOES NOT know Dreamgirls (although the trailer on the Tony's was obviously pointed to the theatre lover who loves the show or so-so theatre lover that may have no clue there is a movie). They know all the theatre community/lovers etc. will see the movie regardless. But they want to bring in the big money by pushing the big names. As the movie nears and buzz grows (outside of the theatre world) and the general public starts talking then they can add more names and start pushing Hudson etc. for award consideration. It's just too early for that from a marketing stand point. The general public unfortunately doesn't know Dreamgirls like the theatre community/lover does, if at all. They have to reel them in with names people know and then just let the audience see for themselves the talent of the others creating a new buzz etc. I wouldn't get too up in arms about it, it's just studio business I would think.

No! It should be marketed as the "Anika Noni Rose Film" and damn Beyonce for preventing that from happening!
well DREAMGIRLS' music isnt exactly authentic to the 1960s sound anyway so that argument is kaput. I mean when kreiger and eyen wrote it, they wanted it to have the same flair as the eras, but to also keep a modern feel to it. that's what kreiger and the underdogs are doing with this film, except the modern flair won't be geared toward the 80s crowd, but today's.
Honestly, if anything, the arrangements in the trailer for the "Dreamgirls" number sound more authentic to the period than the Broadway orchestrations we're all used to hearing.
Did anyone else pick up on the VERY COOL-sounding "Baby Love" / "Stop in the Name of Love" back beats when the girls launched into the chorus with "We're your Dreamgirls..." etc.?
That was not in the Broadway arrangement, and it sounds GREAT here.
We cant really judge 30 seconds of material.
- I actually think Dreamgirls is marketing the movie farely well. They released a trailer a year in advance, and a documentary of the film in pre-production then a second "making of," and now this teaser, all the while never revealing too much.
Which I dont know about you guys, but I just eat up everything they throw out. Which I am sure is what they are hoping for.
Who cares about the billing! You act like it is just "Hollywood"! Broadway would do it too. It is about getting people in the seats. When the film comes out and the others are good, they will get their dues. Does it really bug you that much? Everyone in the united states knows who Beyonce is. Anika? not so much. Even Jennifer is pushing it. "The girl with the big hair on american idol 3 that got kicked off too early." It is a business. If i was spending money on a film would i put Anika's name over the title...... hell no!
hehehe.
plus they will probably have various trailers.
one showing the musical numbers
one with the more dramatic scenes and very little music
one featuring beyonce
one featuring Jennider
one featuring Jamie
and so on...
eventually . . . and probably the next trailer . . . will start off with Effie's version of "One Night Only" and end with the DREAMS version. Like I said, just be patient. It will all fall into place sooner or later. And best12bars, I noticed that too. GREAT touch! I want the soundtrack NOW!

I'm waiting for the very last trailer that ends with "You're gonna loooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooove meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee"
j/k
I am sure when the movie comes out there will be individual posters for various characters.
I'll wait for the Laura Bell Bundy poster, since she's playing one of the backup singers in the whitebread "Cadillac" mini-number.
'cause we ALL know this movie is about HER.
im not playin 12! u will be in my employ very soon...lol
The tone and turn of this thread with it's constant nit-picking over nonsense illustrates perfectly the reason I choose to stay away from this board.
I missed the trailer! I was too busy posting on here last night. I was hoping they'd play it again. Apparently not.
Sheer brilliance. They get people interested in the film by showing a great clip and marketing the right people. Jennifer and Anika will probably have their own posters in movie theatres when the time comes. Let Dreamworks market the film the way that they should to get the general audience interested and then when Anika and Jennifer wow them while at the theatre they'll appreciate them more and hopefully turn this film into a blockbuster.
Cheers,
Christopher
I understand why you chose to stay away, Marquise. But, some of us miss you. But, yeah . . . it seems like all people do on this here message board is gripe about one thing or another. When the movie comes out and you don't like it, then gripe and you will have my blessing. But, it is only the second trailer. Again, be patient.
