Throughly enjoyed the play and the production. Watching Jones, Redgrave and Gaines was a delight (I admit to have never seen the film before - except maybe snippits on cable through the years) The use of slight music cues really worked to weave together a thoughtful and nuanced production.

Question, does anyone know why there was a woman in the first row aisle holding the script and taking notes? Clearly she is with the production but curious as to her function and why a play that has already opened would need to have someone there with the script...my only guess is that she's on hand to cue the actors if need be? It was a bit distracting, I must admit.

Regardless, it was a terrific night of theater.

I can't imagine the actors needing prompting this far into the run, and usually production people are in the back so as NOT to be distracting. Hm....interesting. A grad students doing research?

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I was there last night, as well. Got excellent center orchestra seats at TKTS just before curtain. I didn't notice the prompter, but I did see Joan Rivers sitting in the orchestra with two friends.

I was really moved by the production. Redgrave captures both Daisy's strong-willed obstinance and, as the play progresses, her tenderness. Gaines again proves why he has four Tonys. But the real story here is Jones. The last few times I saw him on stage (CAT, ON GOLDEN POND), he regrettably fell into a shtick pattern: he was James Earl Jones playing James Earl Jones playing whatever role he was playing. In this production, I saw nothing but Hoke, and his interpretation of the role is fresh and riveting. He commands the stage from the first moment he opens his mouth.

The final twenty minutes are some of the most affecting theatre I've seen in years.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

What a fabulous night of theater! Brilliant acting by all particularly James Earl Jones who I saw many years ago as Macbeth. I laughed, I cried - what else can you ask for in theater than actors who move you?

I'm glad this production is generating good talk. Years ago (before the movie was filmed) I saw a touring company do it in Chicago. Even starring the great Dorothy Loudon, I thought the play was just ok. Never would have dreamed at that time that it would be filmed, let alone win the Oscar.

I was talking to a friend of mine who saw the show last week (before i saw it on 11/29) and without prompting he went on about the woman seated on the aisle of the first row with the binder and taking notes....he was really ticked off as he felt it was distracting...still curious to hear the explanation of this...

but def do see this production - it was wonderful

It's doing well. It asked how you were.

Well, next time you see it, tell it I'm doing just wonderfully! Thank it for asking.

Anyway, I went, and it seems they don't sell out, so you can get a ticket until show time.

Does anyone know when they cut the projections? I remember reading about them and they weren't in the show tonight.

I saw the show back in December and that person was sitting in the front row also with a notepad or binder as well and was jotting notes throughout the whole show.

I agree, that's very remarkable. And what's more, she's STILL there. I noticed her when I saw the show last week.
