This has been set to happen for quite a while now.
I love me some Jane Krakowski, this is very exciting!
YES. I'm up for anything that brings John Selya back to broadway!
This is surprising. I don't see why or how a transfer of this would be justified.

Im all for revivals. No one is realy writing good shows anymore. There is room enough for new and old shows on Broadway. I hope they revive No NO Nanette and Applause as well.

Broadway Baby 2. It worries me that you feel people aren't writing good shows anymore. I don't think that's the case at all. I think the current new schlock on Broadway has more to do with what producers are willing to take a chance on than what's being written.
I think, despite good reviews, the show probably wont last too long. Although they have a load of celebrities, it's Damn Yankees. With he current economy, it's definitely not going to be everybody's first choice.

I may be off on this, but, as I recall, the reviews for DY weren't all that great; not bad, just not what I'd call money reviews. I'm pretty sure no one was saying "You've got to see this at all costs" or similar things.
The reviews were pretty good. Some were mixed. GYPSY received a similar reception at City Center, and we know what happened once it got to Broadway.
It was only done 13 years ago why would it be brought back again
Um, mamasdoinfine, shall we discuss how recently there was a revival of Gypsy prior to this one??? A lot less than 13 years.

Without Patti LuPone, Gypsy would never have transferred.
It's different with Damn Yankees, as it does not have anyone in a role that is a MUST SEE.

I agree, Barcelona. Anyone who reads these message boards knows how enthralled I am with Cheyenne, but neither he nor anyone else in DY this go round made it seem like a must for transfer. None of them were bad, some of them quite good (Cheyenne without saying), but just not worth a transfer, IMO. Of course, if that did happen, I'd be going again just to have an excuse to see Cheyenne again.
No No Nanette should be the Encores show to transfer not that lack luster production of Damn Yankees.
I agree with Tom; the Encores production of No, No, Nanette was stellar. Damn Yankees was enjoyable, but just wasn't as buoyant as Nanette was. I also didn't think the show itself was paced well, which is the fault of the material, not the performers.
and...I don't think Gypsy got the same reception Damn Yankees did. I think some of the reviews for Gypsy were tepid, but I don't recall Damn Yankees getting reviews as positive as some of the Gypsy notices were.
You're right, givesmevoice.
"Gypsy" did receive a couple of mixed or negative reviews at City Center, but the raves and the total concensus were in a completely different ballpark than the reviews received by "Damn Yankees".
"Gypsy" was overall declared a must-see event, while "Damn Yankees" was given a pat on the back, if you will.

It was an awful, uninvolving, poorly cast production.
I didn't like GYPSY at City Center much, either, but at least it was worth seeing.
Higgins, I love that we so often agree. :)

- And I don't believe that is what you said at the time.

I believe my initial reaction was that it wasn't LuPone's finest hour, but the rest of the cast and production were more than solid. I also believe I predicted awards for Benanti and Ganes, long before a transfer was planned.
But if I'm wrong, which, for all I know I could be, hindsight is 20/20.
I don't think that this should transfer, I was at opening and even the great crowd couldn't get me to really enjoy it. It was jut okay. But the transfer has been in the works since it was at Encore. Its basically a done deal. In my opinion its probably not a very good idea but oh well...
Wonder what theatre they are looking at and what cast they are looking to replace the people who won't be able to stay involved with the show.
I figured Krakowski would pick a better production to make her Broadway return after her splashy Tony-winning performance in NINE.
You're right Ray. And it's not like her involvement does a great service to the production anyway...
If this production had Jonathan Pryce as Applegate, plus Cheyenne and Jane, then I would go see it.
And should I state the obvious--the time to open a revival of "Damn Yankees" is next March, right before the new stadium opens.
Damn Yankees was good but I still think Follies should have transfered...oh well
