This is BAD news. He masticates the scenery speaking English - imagine him with an Italian accent.
Plus he's a jerk.

How so? He seems cool.
I guess I should have said IMO he's a jerk. I speak from a very limited professional experience but that experience was not unique according to colleagues.
On a larger scale, I thought his campaign of self-promotion during this last awards season went way over the line. He overacts as much in life as he does on the screen.
8 1/2 isn't much like NINE. They are pretty different pieces, 8 1/2 simply inspired or informed NINE.
Am I the only one who thinks it’s funny when some one on here says that they’re not, for what ever reason, going to see a movie based on a musical? We all obviously love musicals since we’re all hear everyday. I reality wouldn’t we see just about any piece of crap that they put on the screen, even if for no other reason than to come here and bitch about it. If you don’t like the casting just say so, don’t pretend like you aren’t going to see the movie. Ya’ll aint foolin no one!
End of rant.
I wonder if his co-stars will have be replaced because he intimidates them...
like he did in "There Will Be Oscar Nominations"... I mean "There Will be Blood"
I think Megan Mullaly would stand up and put his left foot in its place.
iWannaBEaSedaris – I want to be a Sedaris too. Not only am I a huge fan of both Amy and David, but I want their mom as portrayed in David’s memoirs. Who wouldn’t want a woman that fabulously dysfunctional as a mother.
"Now, whether the material is up to Daniel's standards... well, we'll see. "
Um, go get a ****ing cast recording you douchebag?

Daniel Day Lewis?!!! Da-ni-el D-a-hay Looo-wis??!!! What has Rob Marshall been smoking? He's about as Italian as I am Irish. MISCAST! MISCAST! MIS-CAST!

Ditto for Nicole Kidman...she doesn't strike me as the smoldering Italian sexpot Claudia is supposed to be. She's all wrong for that part.

Oh, dear. I had been wondering what Day-Lewis was going to do to follow THERE WILL BE BLOOD. I hadn't dreamed he'd sink so low. Ah, well, another movie to see on cable.
Daniel is not really the right type. Oh well, we shall see. Updated On: 6/2/08 at 09:19 AM
I don't see him as the right type either up front, but he is a character actor, so we'll see.
He'll have to do as much of a transformation as he did in "There Will Be Blood" to pull this off... changing his speaking voice, his mannerisms, his walk, everything. And he should put on a little weight for it too. A lanky, wispy Guido isn't going to cut it.
And then there's the singing. Can he or can't he?
Can Nicole Kidman pull off "Unusual Way" ? They are going to obviously lower it for her, which sucks
Has anyone seen or remember Pinky and the Brain...do you remember when the Brain asked Pinky "Pinky are you thinking what I'm thinking" and Pinky said "Yes, Brain but Sophia Loren in a musical is a terrible idea." When the announced she was in Nine my brain immediately thought about that line, although I think she will be fine
With this cast it looks like they are going to have to change the lyrics of "Be Italian".
Nicole Kidman can sing "Unusual Way." I've no doubt about that.
But she's as white as the driven snow.
Marshall might as well throw Julie Andrews, Hugh Grant and Emma Thompson into the cast.
Julie Andrews, Hugh Grant and Emma Thompson? That's a cast I'd get excited about!
Julie as Lilianne LeFleur? FAB!
BTW, what is Dench supposed to play? Saraghina?
Dench for LeFleur.

I've seen him chew the scenery for a couple of stylized roles where they were actually appropriate choices for the characters, but in the majority of his films, he does not. I saw nothing wrong with his performance in There Will Be Blood simply because I've seen far more over-the-top drama-queen characters than that in real life. Is he a bastard in real life? I have no idea, but bastard or not, he is an excellent actor.
I find it interesting that Kidman is doing this movie. I mean, she pregnant right now and come fall she will have just had her baby.
I hope she doesn't drop out of the movie, because she's a talented actress, but I wouldn't be surprised if she did
"If we don't live happily ever after at least we survive until the end of the week!" -Kermit the frog "I need the money... it costs a lot to look this cheap!" -Dolly P. "Oh please, Over at 'Gypsy' Patti LuPone hasn't even alienated her first daughter yet!" Mary Testa in "Xanadu" "...Like a drunk Chita Rivera!" Robin de Jesus in "In the Heights"
"B*tch, I don't know your life." -Xanadu After that if he still doesn't understand why you were uncomfortable and are now infuriated, kick him again but this time with Jazz Hands!!! -KillerTofu
My main concern is about the "body's nearing 40..." issue and DDL just passing 51.
Will they change it to "body's nearing 50"???
Hmmm....
50 is the new 40.
40 is so '80s.
I'm not sure how I feel about Daniel Day-Lewis, but I think Nicole Kidman will be a fine Claudia. Remember that Carla is the sexpot, while Claudia is more ethereal in Guido's imagination and extremely grounded when she really appears. And Claudia Cardinale, who played the role in the original 8 1/2, was pretty light next to the rest of the cast.
Take a look at his Oscar Acceptance speech last year on YouTube: he could definitely pull off 40, don't you think?
I know plenty of people who don't look nearly as old as they are.
