Annaleigh Ashford or Lea Michele for Rosemary!
I love, love, love this show and have been hoping for a revival for years, but I can't get excited about Radcliffe. I know I've said this before, but I'm just not a fan. Hopefully he'll surprise me (because I WILL be seeing this, no matter who is starring in it!).
I thought he was wonderful in Equus...truly. (and I wasn't necessarily a FAN before that.)
I thought this had already been announced like weeks ago. Was that just speculation at the time?
I thought he was great in Equus as well. I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the recent revival with Matthew Broderick and Megan Mullaly in her pre Will and Grace days. I thoroughly enjoyed that version. I saw it at the Kennedy Center, and then saw it again in NYC with Stamos as JP Finch. Hard to believe that was about 17 years ago. It will be fun to see Ashford's choreography during Coffee Break among others.
I for one am really excited about this...I thought he did a tremendous job in Equus and I'm really looking forward to seeing him onstage again.

I hope it doesn't suffer the same fate as Guys and Dolls, having to follow such a successful revival from the 90s.
Will Megan Mullally reprise her role?
The original and revival logo by Doug Johnson are both so iconic.
I'm surprised, too, that no one -- NOT A SINGLE PERSON -- has mentioned the recent revival.
Renee Elise Goldsberry played Hedy Larue at the reading. Fingers crossed that she's in this production.

With all respect to Radcliffe, no thanks.
As someone who saw the wonderful 1995 revival with Matthew Broderick and SJP (first Broadway show ON Broadway I ever saw), I will happily keep my memories of what a magical and fantastic production that was...unless this one can prove me wrong.

Unless this one can prove that your memories are wrong? How do you expect this production will convince you something you saw 15 years ago was not magical and fantastic? And how can it do that if you refuse to see it? That's, like a Catch-44 or possibly -66.
^How would you know if you don't see it??? (But I understand.)
Wasn't this already announced? Or discussed? Or rumored? I swear I'd heard about this already..
Ashford's hack job on PROMISES PROMISES has me worried what he'll do with this, and Radcliffe is far too young for the role, but it's a pretty great show (the last revival with Broderick was one of my first Broadway shows), and I happen to think Radcliffe did a damn good job with EQUUS, that I feel like this is going to work.
But Ashford is my big worry.
I never knew that SJP replaced Megan. I've never heard her sing, although I do recall that she was in Once Upon a Mattress. Was she comparable to Megan?

Little known fact: Anne Runalfson did SJP's big dance in a wig and matching outfit while SJP hid behind the scenery! That's Broadway fantastic magic for you.
Sarah Jessica Parker cannot sing. Not even close to Megan Mullally's divine vocals as Rosemary. The only reason they brought in SJP was because she and Broderick were dating at the time and the producers hoped that the "cuteness" factor of real life sweethearts playing opposite one another would sell tickets.

Well, knowing how Mr. Ashford trusts material, perhaps they'll add a few Loesser chestnuts to the score. And maybe rewrite some of that Pulitzer Prize-winning book.
You haven't lived until the original J. B. Bigley has called you in the middle of the night describing why all the women of America fell in love with him.
Up until now, there was only RUMOR.

Being an oldtimer who has enough years to remember the original production with Bobby Morse and the wonderful Virginia Martin, I must confess that I've never particularly cared for the score. It's certainly functional and with its moments, but it never blew me away. When the revival came along with Broderick, I figured it was a good chance to re-evaluate the show and I absolutely HATED Broderick in the part. Having vented, I must say I was so impressed with Radcliffe in Equus last year that I began to think of him as one of those miraculous "can do anything" performers -- pleasing though the sight of his genitals may have been, his acting was fierce. ERGO, I'm really excited about this. I don't know what kind of singer he is, but neither Morse nor Broderick are noted for their vocal chops. Can't wait.
I wonder if he'd be a good host for the Tony Awards?
That's a great suggestion, morosco.

I'm mostly wondering how this will affect Ashford's involvement with Alan Menken's new show, Leap of Faith which is trying out of town in Sept 2010, presumably with a Bway target that spring. Looks like Ashford will be doubly busy like O'Brien/Mitchell with Catch Me and Love Never Dies.

It wasn't just SJP. The same switcheroo took place when Mullally was Rosemary. It covers a quick costume change.

I must say that this is surprising news (to me at least). I was planning on seeing "How to Succeed" at Goodspeed in September ... now I think I shall wait for this.
