Great choice! And will add to Bette's already large draw. So far, So good.
Kate Baldwin is perfection, but I think they will go a tad younger.
I could see Michael Urie as Cornelius.

Hrm... the fact that I wasn't entirely certain what role he'd be playing until I clicked on the article is a bit telling. But here's hoping they have a vision...
Ooh, Michael Urie as Cornelius. I don't know if he can sing it but that casting is definitely worth mulling over.

I have it on good authority that Cornelius is cast and is currently finishing up his run in another show on Broadway.

also, anyone know when tickets will go on sale?

I'm surprised they went with another name given how much they're already paying Bette, but I'm sure the ticket prices will reflect that. Either way, that's not going stop me from buying as many as Telecharge will allow the moment they're on-sale. I'm so excited for this.

I'm surprised by the thinly veiled homophobia directed at Pierce by some people (and I'm not talking about the legitimate criticism from the likes of Besty and Kad). Didn't we go through this back when that awful piece about Sean Hayes in PROMISES PROMISES was published?

Hmm yeah not sure about Hyde Pierce.
Is she really right for that role? I definitely think of a different type for Horace.

I'm sure he'll do a grand job. I can see Kelsey G being quite miffed at not getting the part himself.
This revival means business!

maybe Grammer didn't want to do the show.

I'm sure this'll be fun, and I'll definitely try to get tickets, but I had been hoping for John Larroquette since seeing him in 1776. Think he would have been a great Horace to Bette's Dolly.

Hmmm Gavin Creel?! If Gavin is Cornelius and Kate Baldwin is Irene I will truly die of happiness and someone will have to drag my body to the Shubert.
If they are going much younger, Nicholas Barasch could do a good job too. Trying to think of other men who could potentially play him who are currently in something, all I got is Conrad Ricamora and John Cariani. Jesse Tyler Ferguson perhaps could work, though I dotn think he would be available due to Modern Family.

How are they being homophobic when most members of this board are gay men?

My comment wasn't thinly veiled. I came out and wrote what I thought. In my opinion he's a tad bit femme for Horace.
And I'm not being homophobic when I write that, it's just my opinion/observation.
I am gay.

The last couple of Vandergelders I have seen have been a touch femme and it worked beautifully. And Jay Garner on the last tour with Channing was especially bitchy... it was wonderful. This is excellent casting.

I don't know what posts were being called homophobic, but internalized homophobia is a thing.

It's not my thing. I made an observation in very much the same way I would say: "Oh he's too fat for the role" or "He's too short for the role", etc.
If I would have said I thought he were "too butch" for the role, would there be an issue with that as well?
It's my friggin' opinion. Get over it.

While I love David Hyde Pierce, I'm not excited over him as Horace. He can play a curmudgeon. He can deliver a damn funny line.
But I just don't feel the chemistry here. I don't buy them as a couple in any way, shape, or form. I so loved how Tony Sheldon played the role. You wanted him and Dolly to get together. You believed they could be a real couple.
Ho and hum. Kelsey would have been FUN.

Take a deep breath, and know you're entitled to your friggin' opinion. Return to my post. Read the question I quoted. I was responding to THAT question. I was not addressing you. Just the question about how it's possible for gay men to be homophobic. I even said I didn't know to what posts the initial comment was referring.

The rest of my response wasn't directed at you just the part where I wrote that internalized homophobia was not my thing.
Sorry for the confusion.

Get your thoughts in order. If you are responding to my comment saying that there is a sense of "thinly veiled homophobia" from some posters on this thread (and I didn't name you), to reply by saying that yours isn't "thinly veiled" is basically saying that your comment was clearly homophobic. But then you say you are not being homophobic because you are gay. As your comment so perfectly crystallizes it, life and people are full of contradictions. Therefore, it is quite possible, and very common as a matter of fact, for someone who is gay to engage in homophobic behavior. It is also possible to engage in homophobic behavior and not be a homophobe. Many great scholars and thinkers have written and spoken about this issue. A less scholarly portrayal of this that immediately comes to mind is Tony Kushner's brilliantly written monologue for Roy Cohn at the end of Act I of *Millennium Approaches*. Do yourself a favor and go read it before you keep making feeble arguments. I'm not saying I'm unwilling to engage in a discussion of the matter, but I rather do it with someone who has his facts in check and knows what he is talking about.
