"Variety reports that Daniel Day-Lewis is in talks to take on the role of Guido Contini in the upcoming Rob Marshall helmed Nine film. Lewis would replace the previously attached Javier Bardem who left the project a few weeks ago citing exhaustion. Variety also confirms recent casting rumors noting that Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard, Sophia Loren, Nicole Kidman and Judi Dench are attached to the film as well.
Nine is a musical with a book by Arthur Kopit and music and lyrics by Maury Yeston and is based off of Fredrico Fellini's movie 8 1/2. The play tells the story of a young film maker living in Venice trying to juggle all of the women in his life.
The Broadway production, directed by Tommy Tune and choreographed by Thommie Walsh, opened on May 9, 1982 at the 46th Street Theatre, where it ran for 729 performances. The cast included Raúl Juliá as Guido, Karen Akers as Luisa, Liliane Montevecchi as Liliane, Anita Morris as Carla, Shelly Burch as Claudia, and Taina Elg as Guido's mother. Replacements later in the run included Bert Convy and Sergio Franchi as Guido, Maureen McGovern as Luisa, and Priscilla Lopez as Liliane. The musical won five Tony Awards, including best musical..."

Why not let Antonio Banderas recreate his Broadway role. He has already done a movie musical (Evita) and has the more appropriate European appeal (His Spanish appeal is similar to Italian appeal). He is also fairly similar in physical features to Javier Bardem.
Would LOVE to see the women listed in a movie together. Sophia Loren being back in a movie is worth the price of admission right there.
Yeah, bring back Banderas... I can't Day-Lewis in the role at all.
"If we don't live happily ever after at least we survive until the end of the week!" -Kermit the frog "I need the money... it costs a lot to look this cheap!" -Dolly P. "Oh please, Over at 'Gypsy' Patti LuPone hasn't even alienated her first daughter yet!" Mary Testa in "Xanadu" "...Like a drunk Chita Rivera!" Robin de Jesus in "In the Heights"
"B*tch, I don't know your life." -Xanadu After that if he still doesn't understand why you were uncomfortable and are now infuriated, kick him again but this time with Jazz Hands!!! -KillerTofuWell, at least they're sticking to their "Academy Award-winning" theme...
Javier Bardem seemed so perfect for the role, anybody else seems kinda lame. Though Antonio Banderas would be a darn good choice.
Wow...isn't he a little long in the tooth? Maybe they should wait to make this film. I would've bought Robert Downey Jr. before DDL. This. Is. Not. Good. News.
I like the idea of Daniel Day-Lewis, but after Javier Bardem, my pick would have been Robert Downey Jr. (though he may have passed on the role for all we know). Day-Lewis will bring the kind of prestige that Bardem brought to the film though, many people referred to him as the best screen actor of his generation in the THERE WILL BE BLOOD reviews.
I just hope the film happens at all.
ray- I'm with you. I'm happy to have musical films at all, but if it isn't going to work...wait until it does. Day-Lewis is a fine actor, but isn't Guido turning 40. Day-Lewis reads too old for that.
Yeah, I liked the idea of Javier Bardem playing Guido (even though I don't like the show). But technically isn't Guido supposed to be a blonde, like in the movie 8 1/2?
Daniel Day-Lewis can do the musical version of My Left Foot. ("My left foot, always be better than the right one....")

Does anyone know who Dame Judi Dench is going to play? I would guess Stephanie Necrophourous.
As long as he can sing, I think he's a great choice for the role! I don't think he reads too old at all. And not only is he a brilliant (and I don't throw that word around the way people have begun to) actor, but he's the kind of performer who knows himself extremely well and wouldn't take a role if he doesn't believe 100% that he can do it justice and really make something of it. That's reassuring to me in a situation like this.
Hiram-
I think it's pretty safe to assume that Dame Judi Dench would be playing Liliane La Fleur.
Awesome.
From one 2007 Acting Oscar Winner to another, heh. I love Daniel Day-Lewis, but I'm surprised he'd be doing this film. I guess we'll see.
Judi Dench is playing the Liliane Montevecchi role.
Maybe Judi Dench should play Guido. That would be interesting.

I second Robert Downey Jr.- and he can really sing.

"In talks" being Hollywood-speak for press agent horse manure.
I wonder if Besty has read this yet, I'd like to hear his opinion...
can the man sing?
I really don't see DDL as Guido at all (knowing who has played past Guidos).
And uber-British Judi Dench playing Liliane La Fleur???
I kinda wish that they would wait until the pieces fell back together again, or maybe not make it at all now, because it sounds too odd to appease anyone.
I don't know how to feel about this... I'm still disappointed that Bardem dropped out.
I really hope this film turns out well and doesn't fall apart or turn into a complete mess.
I think it is SO difficult to see anybody else but Bardem in the role when a bunch of us had become so incredibly excited about the idea of him playing Guido. It reminds me of how I felt when Meryl Streep dropped out of SWEENEY TODD.
I can't understand why they want Judi Dench to play LaFleur so badly, when there are other actresses that would probably be so much better in the role, perhaps not better, just more appropriate. I also don't think of LaFleur as an old British woman, I think LaFleur should be sexy, if they want to get a British older woman then go for Helen Mirren who has sex appeal to spare, not Dench.
I love the idea of Day-Lewis as Guido. What's interesting is that out of Banderas, Bardem, Downey Jr., and Day-Lewis I think that Daniel Day would be the most believable Italian.
I thought Javier Bardem was perfect and was so sad to hear that it didn't work out. Day-Lewis made me think for a moment, but after thinking back to seeing There Will Be Blood on DVD a few days ago (yeah, I am not a timely cinema boy), I think it could really work. He made Blood, and could possibly do the same for Nine...if he can sing! (at least serviceably...)
I really think he might be wonderful.
As for Judi Dench, it keeps coming up that she's too British. But I don't see it being that way. I keep thinking of her performance in "Mrs. Henderson Presents" where she's just such an eccentric, pushy diva. Many of the elements she brought to that role will suit La Fleur perfectly. And I'm sure she'll be doing a French dialect (which she pulled off quite nicely in "Chocolat"). Plus, she naturally comes with an air of class and significance in life and her performances(except when playing a down-trodden character). All these things considered, I think she's phenomenal casting. But that's just me =)
