I don't think stans are bad at all, especially teen ones. They're becoming the younger generation of theatre lovers, and shaming them only gets rid of theatre lovers.
As a college aged fan, Stan Broadway is really bad. Hamilton Stans are the worst. I told one I liked musicals and then at 2 am I'd be recieving a porn fic of Laurans and Hamilton. And then the Hansen Stans... They just fetishise mental illness (not a generalization, check Tumblr). Remember last year when Hansen was in a war with Comet over best musical. Same with dolly vs Falsettos. How disappointing it is to see this. Also Stan Twitter is at least the best of stand-up Stan Tumblr is terrible. Bands visit deserves everything it got, even though I wish Spongebob and Girls got some love.
No, funhamilton_rent, shaming the behavior of the worst is fine. It's setting an example as to what's acceptable. I'm all about welcoming young folks who will be the next generation of theatre fans, but this particular vocal segment is a cesspool.

The Stans are absolutely insufferable. They come from all walks, too. Last year, there were a ton of obnoxious stans from The Great Comet, who were brutal to DEH and CFA because their show didn't win. Even though DEH and CFA are two of the most original and well-respected works in recent history. This year it's Mean Girls (and Spongebob to a small extent). J.Garcia had it right pointing out that they view these shows as extensions of their identity. Hopefully they grow up and realize that there are more opinions than just their own.

Just because they are young theatre fans does not mean they get a pass for being downright rude to Broadway actors. Stan behavior often crosses personal and professional boundaries, and causes many actors to shy away from public appearances. There's a reason why people like Barrett Wilbert Weed, Christian Borle, Ben Platt, etc. stage door(ed) very little or not at all- their fan bases are made up of many young fans who feel entitled to the actors' attention, and become obsessive and aggressive when they interact with said actors. We can still support young theatre fans and call them out for their negative behavior, or at least try to explain/demonstrate how these behaviors are not conducive to a positive actor-fanbase relationship. It's okay to post about how you're upset your favorite actor didn't win a Tony, it's not okay to verbally attack and shame the actor that did win out of a personal sense of vengeance.

I was just upset the way the instagram teenagers were attacking TBV on instagram. It was a bad place to be in and i hope the actors dont see the comments. I was very frustrated last night at the amount of disrespect people were giving the winners because mean girls or spongebob didnt win. It was not my intent to just trash the other shows because the bands visit was the greatest broadway show."
Are the comments on the Tony Awards account or on different actor accounts? Can they be deleted if they're on someone else's post?

Hopefully by the time they turn 15 they'll figure out some self-reflection.
Hamilton stans are the worst? I guess I don't pay attention to every social media platform because I've still yet to see anything worse than the Wicked stans of 2003-04. Though Rentheads rank a close second for those that can remember back that far. They didn't even need social media to be obnoxious.
Rentheads of that era were vocal, but they had fewer places and opportunities to congregate outside their own show's bubble, IMO.
I'm certainly not of the era of Wicked Stans, but rentheads were pretty bad. It's not a competition of whose Stans are worse though, it's the fact that within the past year and a half there have been:
- Ben Platt not stagedooring anymore due to comments and strange occurances at the door.
- A fan follows Ethan Slater home after his performance in SpongeBob
- An egg is thrown at Barrett Wilbert Weed at the stagedoor
- Teens waiting before shows to see their favorite actor
- Rude comments about one show "robbing" another at the Tony's
- Generally trashy behavior in theatres (on phone, live streaming, being loud) all by Stans.
This couldn't have been as bad during the past era, and these people need to know the conduct they are showing at theatre is not alright, and that their "idol" deserves better treatment than this.

With current stats on cluster B personality disorders reaching 30% within millennials this is hardly surprising behaviour.
Wait until they become adults.
Hopefully Trump will have destroyed the world by then...

90% of phone use that I've observed in the theatre has been from middle aged people, and 99% of the cases of loud talking I've observed have been elderly people. Not saying you're wrong about the Stans doing it too, but it's certainly not just them! Far from it!

And housewives from Jersey x
I saw someone comment "Itamar Moses is a fugly cow" on Instagram.
It's almost funny how they miss the entire message of the show they're so in love with.
Also, agreed that none of them have ever even seen these shows (bootlegs DON'T count). A lot have never even been to New York.
Young enthusiasts are what we need, but "stans" are extremely, EXTREMELY toxic.

They're doing it for attention and to get a reaction and people are feeding them their outrage which is exactly what they want.
Ignore them.

That part was specifically in reference to the 15 year old who live streamed SpongeBob on her Spongebob fanpage. I'm 90% sure this took place about an hour before the car chasing. Certainly not just them though, but livestreaming is where I draw a thick line. And they probably made it into a bootleg knowing how 1/2 of these young Stans only will watch bootlegs (Dear Evan Hansen has 6 floating around, and mean girls already has 2)

Narcissists believe that if they like something then it MUST be amazing as THEY like it and THEY are amazing.
They take complete ownership of it and it becomes an extension of themselves, so any criticism of it is taken as a disgusting personal attack on them as people.
It is a truly frightening disorder.

No. Just...no. Calling out their horrid behavior is exactly what the theatre needs. Mainly because their horrid behavior is exactly what the theatre doesn't need.

Absolutely. We Broadway fans have seen some scary behavior because it’s personal and people stalk during stage door experiences and whatnot. At least it’s still sort of contained. There has been some scary crap with fan communities of other mediums like animated shows, sci-fi/fantasy series, comics, musicians, etc. that are larger and less easy to control. It’s like social media and them getting followers empowers them to rule their little kingdoms. Truly scary stuff

I completely agree! Didn’t mean to say that I thought verbal attacking or stagedoor stalking were ok.

The worst I've experienced was one of the all ages performances of Ghost Quartet, which was the only show I could get tickets to.
There was a group of teenage girls who were all obviously Comet fans whose behaviour was just scary.
It was probably worse because they were contained in such a small area, but their behaviour was just spooky. They were so bad I didn't even wait around after the show to buy merchandise which I am now kicking myself for, but they were just freakish!
I've never heard of STANS till this post...had to google.
Teens will be teens.
