There is no other show coming in this season that will be as emotional as their performances. Also, everyone is just raving about their performances. i think DEH material wise will be lucky, while Comet will be lucky with the artistic side of the night along with direction. I will say its interesting how we are all basically ruling out the other shows coming in...Im assuming since this is why i am at least, they are just not the big groundbreaking show. what, Charlie? Groundhog day? War Paint....cause a show about designers is obviously groundbreaking....the only show i think could spark some outrage for us DEH fans is Come From Away, though I'm interested in seeing how it plays here, given well, this is nyc.

"

Again, don't debase or discount anything you haven't seen. A tour de force performance does not have to be groundbreaking but does the best of what can be done. Sometimes, a winning performance is a particularly good one in a particularly bad show. You never know. And we still have half a year to go.

I expect to see DEH take book and maybe score.  The Great Comet also has a pretty good shot at score as well and I think that it should win for orchestrations.

As for Best Musical, I think that both have a strong shot.  I've heard some people say that DEH was the better show and I've heard some people say that Comet was the better show.  I would love to see a tie since I think that both are equally great for completely seperate reasons.  I also think that they may possibly split the vote and perhaps Groundhog Day or War Paint or Come From Away (my predictions for the best musical nominations) will take the cake.

As for performances, I think that Ben Platt is an absolute lock for best actor.  I think that his possible competition may be Josh Groban, Jon Jon Briones, Andy Karl, and definitely Jake Gyllenhaal. Rachel Bay Jones also has a pretty strong shot at Supporting actress, but she does have some competition from Comet (Amber Gray and possibly Brittain Ashford), and from Jennifer Laura, but I think that her biggest competition is from Stephanie J. Block.  Also, if I Phylicia Rashad decides to join the Sunday revival, I expect to see a nomination there.  I expect to see Michael Park land a supporting actor nomination and maybe even a win.  Although, if Comet were smart, they would campaign to put Josh Groban in supporting because he would have a much larger chance at winning, but because his name is above the title, it might be challenging to make that argument. Lucas Steele is also giving a remarkable performance and I wouldn't be surprised if he won. Gavin Creel also might provide some competition from Hello Dolly! and the men in War Paint may also gather some attention.  I also think that Andrew Rannels and Brandon Uranowitz may also have a shot at a nomination. Overall, I think that DEH has a chance at winning 3 out of 4 acting categories.

As for tech, I expect to see Comet clear all of them.  The only real competition that they might face is from Groundhog Day which I hear has some incredibly elaborate technical elements.

BTW, I also think that Miss Saigon will probably land a few nominations here and there, but the competion for revival is pretty tough this year between Sunday and Dolly and Falsettos.  I don't expect it to sweep the awards.

I'd like to add a few thoughts.

I haven't seen Grat Comet yet to make a true decision, but I'm certain it will win Sets and Costumes, but I think Evan Hansen has a shot at taking lighting-it is a show after technology, and a few of the stage images created solely with lighting are breathtaking.

I also feel like Alex Lac is going to win for orchestrations, still on the steam of Hamilton from last season.

Michael Park might get a nomination but I wouldn't go so far as to say he will win. There is already a much stronger supporting performances in Lucas Steele in Great Comet.

Jakeevan - Great Comet's lighting is much more impressive. The chandeliers are really beautiful and the lighting is pulsing and exciting. I agree that Evan Hansen creates some striking stage images, but they are mainly contained to a few songs with lighting being pretty simple the rest of the time. The technical feat of Great Comet's lighting is what makes me think they'll win.

I wouldn't count on Hamilton love spurring another win for Alex. I feel like his work on Dear Evan Hansen is fine - but Great Comet's orchestrations are much more diverse and create a new interesting sound. Just my two cents

Hello, Dolly! hasn't even started performances, so I wouldn't call it a frontrunner just yet. The only concern I have for it is director Jerry Zaks. It's been a while since he's been able to hit a home run on Broadway.

Falsettos I think will land a few nominations, but no wins since it will be closed by the time Tony Season rolls around. As we've seen in the past, it's hard for closed shows to win Best Revival of a Musical (Follies, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Spring Awakening).

At this point, Sunday in the Park with George will be ending its limited run a week before Tony nominations are even announced, so I don't know how much that will effect its chances of winning.

I think Great Comet has a great shot at best musical over DEH, though I loved both. I think Great Comet is such a milestone in the field. My bet is on Great Comet for Musical, direction, set design, lighting, and score. DEH for best actor, featured actress, and book.

Yes, we all know a sh*t ton of musicals have yet to open but I'm sticking with these predictions.

^ Widely agree with MadonnaMusical. This thread actually compelled me to list out who I think will win every Musical category this year (except Revival). Again, these are my thoughts having seen both shows, and of course without knowledge of the potential spring knockouts:

Best Musical: Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812

Best Actor in a Musical: Ben Platt (Dear Evan Hansen)

Best Actress in a Musical: Bette Midler (Hello, Dolly!)

Best Featured Actor in a Musical: Lucas Steele (The Great Comet)

Best Featured Actress in a Musical: Rachel Bay Jones (Dear Evan Hansen)

Best Director of a Musical: Rachel Chavkin (The Great Comet)

Best Book of a Musical: TOSS-UP between Malloy and Steven Levenson for DEH. Though I hope Malloy takes it, I think this could be the category they award to DEH if Malloy wins for Score and Orchestrations.

Best Score: Dave Malloy (The Great Comet)

Best Scenic Design of a Musical: Mimi Lien (The Great Comet)

Best Lighting Design of a Musical: Bradley King (The Great Comet)

Best Costume Design of a Musical: Paloma Young (The Great Comet)

Best Choreography: TBD—I think this will be taken by a spring 2017 musical.

Best Orchestrations: Dave Malloy (The Great Comet)

Great comets story isn't really original, and at least I found it confusing....so I'm gonna say it's DEH. I also think Pask and Paul will win for music just because I think all of Comet sounds basically the same (I mean not that deh doesn't) but the only standout song on deh were the top of each act and the ending of act 1 along with Charming.

I wasn't saying that I think that Falsettos or Sunday has a chance at winning.  I don't think that they will since they are both limited runs, but I do think that they will be nominated.  I think that we can say that with Dolly's cast, the show can't be too terrible.  I expect to see a first rate revival and I think that, that's what we will be seeing.  It's definitely kind of the frontrunner even though it hasn't even opened.

Also, I think Annaleigh Ashford may give Bette Midler a run for her money in the best actress category.

I agree that it does have potential, but potential doesn't mean gold. Also in regards to Lead Actress in a Musical, there's still other potential candidates to come from Christy Altomare, Christine Ebersole, Patti LuPone, Eva Noblezada, etc.

I've interrupted this thread to thank all the members who touted me on to this show and Great Comet.  We're going on our 25th anniversary next week and tickets are now much more for Comet and an obscene amount more for DEH.
