Dear Evan Hansen at the Tonys

I saw DEH for the first time on Tuesday, and I was so touched by it. I am currently obsessed. Wondering which Tonys everyone thinks it will be nominated for. I was thinking:

Best Musical

Best Score

Best Book

Best Leading Actor - Ben Platt

Best Featured Actor - Michael Park

Best Featured Actor - Will Roland (not likely, but he added some great comedic moments into the otherwise tearjerking show)

Best Featured Actress - Laura Dreyfuss (not sure if she is leading or featured, and again she might not get a nod but I loved her performance)

Best Featured Actress - Rachel Bay Jones

Best Featured Actress - Jennifer Laura Thompson

Best Set Design

Best Lighting Design

Best Direction

Best Orchestrations

(I bolded the ones I thought it might win also)

The ones bolded are the ones likely to get nominated, winning is another story. I suspect Ben, Rachel, Music and musical to win. Book is definitely a high chance of winning.

In love as I am with DEH, I have a hard time seeing anything other than Great Comet winning Set Design.

Sorry, but I thought their set was terrible and over laden with projections. Set design is totally Comet's. I'm also not so sure about Score - Comet's is much more versatile and fresh and original. Not to say DEH's score is bad, but Comet just has a new sound about it.

I think both rachel bay jones and jennifer laura som have equal shots of a featured actress nomination. but who will win is a tough one. I personally think rachel bay jones is giving the flashier performance.

I think they'll do a mashup of waving through a window and you will be found, I agree Rachel is giving the more flashier performance. With that said I can definitely see Jennifer getting a nom as well. She's giving a beautiful performance just Rachel having 2 songs gives her the big boost

At this point, I think The Great Comet is the frontrunner to win Best Direction of a Musical, Best Lighting Design of a Musical, and Best Scenic Design of a Musical.

You want might to hold on and see what the spring has to offer. Miss Saigon and Hello Dolly! are definitely strong contenders in multiple categories and so are, possibly, War Paint, Charlie, and Amelie, if the changes they make during the transfer are good enough.

I'm really pulling for Great Comet over Hansen in most every category. I think Platt and Bay Jones will—and should—win Tonys, but I'm hoping Comet will prevail in basically everything else.

Given who's (possibly) moving to DC and how snarky, dark, and unfortunately relevant this production is, Miss Saigon has a better chance than Les Miz.

I think the tony awards might reward Miss Saigon revival since the show didn't win back in 1991.

I think Evan Hansen will win Best Actor, Featured Actress, Book, and Score, while Comet will take Direction, Set Design, Costumes, and Lighting. I could see DEH or Great Comet taking Best Musical, though. This is such an exciting year!

The difference there is that the most recent revival of Les Miserables opened in a slow season for musical revivals. While it did get some fairly good reviews from critics, it was then overshadowed by stronger competition from Hedwig & the Angry Inch and Violet.

We shall see how competition stacks up this year. Hello, Dolly! and Miss Saigon are (at this point) the only two musical revivals this season that will still be running past the 2017 Tony Awards.

I agree that, at this point, Dear Evan Hansen is a frontrunner for Best Musical (and Platt is basically a lock) but I would be truly surprised if Great Comet didn't win Direction and all of the design awards, especially Lighting and Set. The show has certainly divided people, but I can't imagine the director and creative team of any other upcoming musical working on the level of the Comet folks in those categories.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

I suspect most (if not, frankly, all) of the technical awards will go to Comet, and that includes direction. However as far as most of the "content" and "material" awards go, DEH will prevail. The Tonys, more so than say the Oscars, have a tendency to award the shows which appeal to the heart over head. Also, Ben Platt and Rachel Bay Jones are basically locks to win in my opinion, with noms for Jennifer Laura and Michael Park highly deserved.

I think at this point, knowing how the Tony voters went in the past (liking more touching, emotional performances, as another poster said) I think Ben and Rachel are basically locks to win. There is no other show coming in this season that will be as emotional as their performances. Also, everyone is just raving about their performances. i think DEH material wise will be lucky, while Comet will be lucky with the artistic side of the night along with direction. I will say its interesting how we are all basically ruling out the other shows coming in...Im assuming since this is why i am at least, they are just not the big groundbreaking show. what, Charlie? Groundhog day? War Paint....cause a show about designers is obviously groundbreaking....the only show i think could spark some outrage for us DEH fans is Come From Away, though I'm interested in seeing how it plays here, given well, this is nyc.

Again, don't debase or discount anything you haven't seen. A tour de force performance does not have to be groundbreaking but does the best of what can be done. Sometimes, a winning performance is a particularly good one in a particularly bad show. You never know. And we still have half a year to go.
