He is completely awesome. I love his voice. It's so unique and awesome. Noone has ever had a voice like his and noone will again. I don't know how much he must have smoked as a child, but whatever it is...his voice is just completely awesome. I'd much rather have a voice like his narrating movie trailers or on your local news. Harvey Fierstein would be the most awesome news anchor of all time.

I applaud Harvey for his performance in everything!
Harvey is "gay royalty", a national treasure, and along with Devine, one of 2 perfect EDNA'S!!!
Thanks Midnight Radio for a lovely post!

By the way, what is his ethnicity? "Fierstein", correct me if I'm wrong, is a Slavic name?

I like him as an actor...I just cannot stand his voice at all.
It's not "Firestein" but "Fierstein."
He can be an excellent writer (TORCH SONG TRILOGY anyone?) and he is indeed one of two perfect Ednas (I'm sorry but as good as the HAIRSPRAY film is, Travolta's Edna can't even begin touch Divine or Fierstein).
People complain about his voice but he can actually sell a number like few can even if his voice isn't your typical generic voice.
Wonderful! Thank you thank you thank you
Harvey's been one of my favorite actor's ever since I was little; his voice is beyond amazing.

"With a voice like this, I could always drive a cab."
- TORCH SONG TRILOGY
I love Harvey as well, and while people are correcting names, it is Divine, not Devine. LOL!
That voice is not from smoking. I believe he has said that his gravely voice was due to damage he sustained in a play at La Mama, in which he had to deliver his dialogue screaming over a Kate Smith record.

LOL, that guy just brings a smile to my face every time!
Is it time to bring "Torch Song" back to broadway?
Again...it's DIVINE -- enough with this Devine sh*t.
BrodyFosse confirms it again. Whew. I was holding my breath on that one.

When was the Harvey picture taken? That costume is unfamiliar.

I think that's a photo from the 2003 Tony performance. That dress isn't used in the Broadway production.

They made him a new costume just for the TONYS?
Actually, I think that was a new dress for the Las Vegas version.
or maybe he was photographed on the way to the market. he's in his house dress.
Is that the Seattle tryout dress? The stage looks exactly like the Broadway stage though... Could it be a dress form previews?
That looks like the new finale gown from the Las Vegas production.

I will never forget seeing him in Hairspray. I was a changed woman from that moment on - he is so graceful and in character at all times - even playing a role like Edna. I've never seen anything like it. Harvey is definitely royalty!

seen hairspray in previews and was lucky enough to get his autograph after the show. He was extremely gracious to the crowds waiting for outside after the performance
He was the best Edna ever...........
