Ok...Missy Elliot did not perform at the Tonys. She's a rapper, not a singer. Mary J. Blige performed at the Tonys.
Also, I really liked Jay-Z's "A Hard Knock Life." I thought it was pretty clever.

*blushes* Personally mutilated "Seasons of Love" for an audtion. I must have something screwing me up- I can't sing at all.
(Well, I'm told that I have a decent voice. Cept I'm horribly off-key (no professional music lessons))

I saw a youth theater production of Godspell, and they had a soprano singing "Turn Back, O Man," and she couldn't hit the low notes at all, you know, the ones that make the song sound so cool? So she kept taking them up the octave instead. It was horrid.
And then, during the Olympics, I remember a commercial with this guy singing "Somewhere" in this awful, breathy voice, and I muted the TV every time that it came on.

Posted: 11/17/04 at 10:26pmMy high school did a production of Once Upon This Island. Its a great show, but because of the lack of diversity of the school, it was an entirely white cast. Needless to say, it was an awful rendition of the show. The one song that lingers in my memory was this skinny little white girl singing "Mama Will Provide". I had to pinch myself not to laugh. And that same year, the junior high production was Fiddler on The Roof and I'll suffice by saying that no boy whose voice hasn't changed should ever be allowed to sing "If I Were A Rich Man".

Posted: 11/17/04 at 10:37pmOh my goodness, I have been waiting for this topic!! Did anyone see Aretha Franklin sing "I Dreamed A Dream" on a TV special for President Clinton's first inauguration? Queen of Soul or no, it was WRETCHED!! This monstrosity is preserved for eternity on a compilation called Ultimate Broadway. I am all for personal interpretation of music, but when a song is rendered unrecognizable by "improvisation," it’s beyond artistry or even good sense. There is one awful point when she breaks away from the lyric and shouts, "What the hell is going on?" It is so terrible. Does anyone else remember?

Paradox-error: simmilar story about an asian girl singing. I go to a boarding school and we have a good percentage of international students. alot from Korea. and this on girl, who has a great voice btw, always sings romantic ballads at everything. Her pronunciation is horrible though it a struggle not to laugh the whole time Most notably is her rendition of "My Funny Valentine"....
"My bunny bvalentoin
sweed comeh bvalentoin
you meck me smaoil when your ewe....
eeees yo bigure dess san gdeek
eeeees you mout a mill week
wheh yeh oooopan eet toooo spik
ah you SMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTTT....
eesh de eesh bvalointoins deeeeh.
The thing is shes really vocally talented but her pronunciation is just so hillarious. Oh god Im going to hell for that post.

Omigod, I'm having flashbacks. I taught diction at a community college to ESL students and one of my students was working on that West Side Story classic, "Dere's a pwace foh aaaazzzz."
And I'd like to add, Hasselhoff singing ANYTHING!!

It's not Broadway, but Chrissy Hynde's version of "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" is atrocious. She's off-key through the whole thing.

David the Hassel of hoff singing any thing period point blank NO! as a matter of fact...HELL no!
Mary J. Blige singing at the Tony's made me want to put my foot through the tv.
Also a few years back when i was in high school we did greas and the guy who sang "Magic Changes" was so horrible that the pit would intentionally try to drown him out.
I remember hearing someone singing "What I Did For Love" and they put so damn much verbrato in the song that it made me want to commit double homocide kill the singer and the director!
and In Little Shop of Horrors there's a song where the plant and Seymore are singing together, i forget the name of the song but the two people singing one was super flat and the other was practly tone deaf.

Any song that Linda Eder sings...
Jekkyl and Hyde excluded, as we all know those songs weren't too decent to being with.

"as we all know those songs weren't too decent to being with."
I don't know that at all.
I saw a community theatre production of West Side Story which was horrendous for many reasons, but when Tony sang Maria (and other songs as well), I had a difficult time stifling laughter. Every note above C (which is half the song) he sang in a very weak falsetto.
muh.....REE UHHHH!
say it LOUD AND THERE'S MUSIC PLAYING!

Oh My god! You did not just say that anything Linda Eder sings!!!! I am so tired of hearing people blah blah blather about how much they dont like her.
I find her vresions to be wonderful. I have never heard a version of a song I didn't like. Yes I love and many people know that... but EVERYTHING?
You must have only heard a little. And if you hate her so much how do you know all her renditions are bad huh? Oh now I am just mad.

Posted: 11/18/04 at 2:39pmI adore Linda Eder as well, and I think anything she sings sounds amazing. And what's with JEKYLL not being great music? I think it's Wildhorn's best. I know, that doesn't say much, but I really thought his J&H score was fantastic.

Posted: 11/18/04 at 9:39pmYou know what? The national anthem is a decent song. And yet 80% of singers at major sporting events manage to destroy it. The memory of Fantasia's rendition during the Baseball All-Star Game this year is terrifying.
