One more question: Who was singing during the final song? They didn't announce it like they did for all the others, unless I missed it.
Marty Thomas, Steven Skaynes, Lisa Brescia, and Katie Thompson, backed up by a whole boatload of people.

Lest we forget, Kerry Butler sang that wonderful preview song "Fly..." from the upcoming Catch Me If You Can. And surprised by the beautiful voice of the rather unknown Matt Alber (bought his songs after the concert).
Great night all around.

I found the night to be highly enjoyable, though as many have mentioned, about two hours too long. After working all day, a 4 hour benefit wasn't what I had in mind for my evening...that being said I'm still very happy I went.
The evening was, however, effectively ruined by the RIDICULOUS fan girls sitting next to me. You'd think they'd never seen someone "famous" before. Not to mention when they announced the cast of Spring Awakening they both flailed and smacked me in the face. After that I feared for my safety and sat as far away from them as I could manage in my seat. I understand being excited, but this was just ridiculous. As was their INCESSANT sobbing during For Good. We're sitting in the Gershwin, you had to have seen that one coming, and I can guarantee you've heard the song before. Cut the ridiculous body shaking sobs (those also happened during Spring Awakening), they're annoying.
But, aside from my obnoxious row mates, I enjoyed about 98% of the evening (though we could have easily killed an hour of the show by taking out the "can marry"/"cant marry" section of the evening...that felt like it took longer than it did)

Posted: 2/24/09 at 1:28pmIt was a lovely evening but far too long. Too many speeches preaching to the choir. The opening number Prop 8 The Musical, Purple Haze dancing their butts off to Beyonce, and Mark Indelicato from "Ugly Betty" singing and dancing with the cast of Mamma Mia were my very favorite performances. Great to see the young man who plays a young gay person on TV (and may very well be gay in real life) grow up in front of our eyes and perform on a Broadway stage, he was adorable and that's real progress to me. Jane Fonda and Keith Olbermann getting well deserved ovations for their tireless commitment to social justice were fantastic. And Harvey Fierstein's letter to President Obama was perfect; thanks again to one of the pioneers of the LGBT civil rights movement for saying what needed to be said.

Posted: 2/24/09 at 1:49pmFor those of you who were there, did Nicole Parker perform? I was hoping she'd do her excellent rendition of "Defying Logic" as Sarah Palin (see youtube). But no one has mentioned her so far... I think she was listed as one of the performers.

Posted: 2/24/09 at 1:56pmNicole Parker had a few lines in "Prop 8 The Musical", but she opened the second act doing an impersonation of Ellen Degeneres... outfit, wig, and all.

Posted: 2/24/09 at 1:59pmMy friend Brian was there and said the night was one of the best grouping of talent and passion he had seen in years in the big apple! I am so jealous!! he also told me that one of our fav performers from Hairspray and Rent was in the Prop 8 number, Jordan Ballard, but i thought she was in Vegas with Bette Midler??? Was it someone else? I have tickets for May! Please tel me she is still there as a harlette!!

Mercifully, no. Tina Fey is the only person who can do Sarah Palin justice.

Parks,
Cyndi Lauper signed like one autograph and went straight to her car. She said something about not feeling well.
As for the person who asked who came out. Lisa Brescia,Lindsay K. Northen,Julie Reiber, the Wicked dancers and the guys from the last number. There were other people also who I had no clue who they were. I know one was Marty Thomas. Katie Adams and Katie Thompson both came out of the other door but they walked through the parking garage thing over to the other side to where we were. Oh and Chelsea Krombach walked in the SD...LOL.

I asked Cyndi for a photo and she said she wasn't feeling well. beggars can't be choosers.
Bebe Neuwirth's Mad lib song was HILARIOUS I thought. She also did it with much of a straight face.
I agree the Marc and Mamma Mia number went a lot better then I would have thought. Kerry Butler took my breath away during her song. That event is the single most guiltiest pleasure I EVER HAD.
When I see concert in the title of the event, I would assume theater etiquette is not REQUIRED. Way to many stiffs attending.
the runtime was ridiculous, the laughing pizza gig, i thought was even more gay for Broadway. How does that family duo band thing still exists?

Posted: 2/25/09 at 11:10amI've enjoyed what I've seen of the clips so far. Hope there's a DVD of the musical performances for sale sometime soon. My favorite performances are Stephanie J. Block's, Kerry Butler's, and The Dream dance/montage.

Thank you for the Cyndi information--I feel much better now.
I was sad that Nicole didn't get more laughs as Ellen--I thought she was very good and hilarious! Stephanie's song seemed kind of cheesy to me, but it was nice. I LOVED Kerry's song. It blew me away! The Single Ladies dance is up on Facebook. It was such a fun night!

Posted: 2/25/09 at 12:32pmDoes anyone know who wrote Stephanie's song or where it was from? Was it written specifically to be about her brother, or were the lyrics just applicable to her personal situation?
