I think Depp has a enough buzz for a nomination.
But this does matter for the current state of the movie. They were counting on Globe wins to help promote it and expand it even more.

So happy that Depp and the movie won. Both are well deserved.

Posted: 1/13/08 at 10:33pmIt's ridiculous to compare Depp to Madonna. Depp is a popular, well-liked, respected actor in the film community with two previous Oscar nominations to his credit. Madonna is none of those things and I do like her. LOL Evita was one of the few movies where she didn't receive universal pans for her acting, but she didn't receive across the board good reviews either. Also, neither Evita nor Dreamgirls were as critically acclaimed as Sweeney Todd so that comparison is unfair too.

Posted: 1/13/08 at 11:12pmIt's going to end up being Depp against Day-Lewis for Best Actor at the Oscars. No one else is even close, and Depp has the never-won sympathy thing going (plus Day-Lewis dropped out for so long, and he isn't as well respected.)

I read yesterday an article that referred to Daniel Day-Lewis as "one of the best screen actors ever" and tonight Larry King called his performance in THERE WILL BE BLOOD "one of the best screen performances committed to the screen" or something to that effect.
Depp will hopefully get a nomination but Day-Lewis and Javier Bardem are this year's Whitaker and Mirren, no one is going to beat them.

Are you kidding me? Daniel Day-Lewis has to be one of the most respected actors in Hollywood: not only is he fantastic at what he does, he's also incredibly selective, only taking jobs he considers to be absolutely right. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Daniel Day-Lewis is God.
No, this race is going to be very, very, VERY close. The only thing that could stop the Day-Lewis-Train is sympathy for a man who's never won before.

Putting all my views on the Sweeney Movie aside (mostly negative...)
I am happy for Depp, but I am almost positive that it will be Daniel Day-Lewis come Oscar time. Depp will be nominated but it is DDL who will take home the gold.

He's probably one of the few actors who is even MORE respected than Depp, actually.
The opposite of creation isn't war, it's stagnation.
