Devil Wears Prada Musical

Patti's a lovely lady in real life, but she plays a great bitch. I can't tell you how wonderful I think she'd be.

Maria Friedman as Miranda and Celia Keenan-Bolger as Andrea.
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

this would be the best idea for a musical

MERYLL would just be trrific in it!

I would so go and see this if it happened.

And I really want Patti to originate a role in a new musical on Broadway, so I'd adore her in the part of Miranda, if it ever happened.

Devil Wears Prada Musical

Maria Friedman as Miranda??? How?
OK, I'm completely against the idea of the movie being turned into a stage musical (haven't read the novel though), it is one of those movies that rely a lot in the fact that it is a movie to succeed, IMO. I think it would lose all its charm and excitement on stage. Plus, Miranda--the film's Miranda--is a character than would NEVER sing. Sondheim has made shows about characters who wouldn't sing (he mentions the main reason COMPANY was structured so uniquely in terms of its score is because he felt none of this characters would sing in the typical book musical way). I can't think of any other composer who could make this work, perhaps Jeanine Tesori or Adam Guettel (if he would ever be interested in adapting this kind of material).
Having said that, LuPone is ALL wrong for the part. Miranda is a classy, quiet, understated character, none of those characteristics fit LuPone. Mind you, I have nothing against her, but you just need to look at the list of characters LuPone has played successfully and you'll know she would be miscast as Miranda (Evita Peron, Mrs.Lovett, Momma Rose, Reno, Cora Hoover, etc). Same with Debra Monk whom I adore but just like I can't buy her as Joanne, I could never buy her as Miranda.
Donna Murphy, Bebe Neuwirth (who played a similar role in HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN 10 DAYS), Julie White, and Christine Ebersole are much more appropriate for the role. Even Marin Mazzie would probably be a good Miranda in a few years.
I'd pick Anika Noni Rose, Erin Davie, or Lea Michele as Andrea and Jenny Powers as Emily.

"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"

I think it would be more fitting to the character if Miranda didn't sing.
I mean, Denzel Washington? Gun to my head..of course.

I think it would work as a subtle musical. Still think Johannssen would be good as Andrea. And I'm sticking with the classy Christine Ebersole as Miranda.

Composer wise I think Tesori would be ideal.

I'd love to see Kristin Chenoweth as Miranda.

In like 15 years, maybe. I don't think she's right for it either.

Devil Wears Prada Musical

I think a musical based off of the Devil Wears Prada book might work better than one based off of the movie screenplay; it especially gives the character of Emily more to do and introduces more secondary characters who could be fleshed out in a cute way for the musical.

At the same time though, I can't help but feel like The Devil Wears Prada might turn out sort of a lot like Legally Blonde. Could be wrong though.

Devil Wears Prada Musical

Weird!!! In the other thread where you said what movie you wanted to be made a musical i said Devil Wears Prada, and i didn't even know about this thread lol. Anways

I think it could actually work. I can see the song where Emily first seens Andy, where Andy interviews with Miranda, where Andy gets a makeover (which i think would be the best song ever!), where Andy has to do some soul searching...

Wow i wish it was happening! I'd be so excited!

But I still think Miranda should be a non-singing role.
