Brooke Shields as Miranda?? Reeeally??
I agree, Betty Buckley would be great.
I just fear that people who might musicalize this will make it sit-comy, like "Ugly Betty" meets "Legally Blonde The Musical." It needs to retain the elegance of the movie.

I never see this happening, but I also have to say Sutton as Andrea
and Patti would be funny as Miranda :P

"This is a stinker of an idea. Only teenage girls would find it appealing."
Yup, appealing to that demographic has yielded such dismal results for Wicked. (Who exactly do you think goes to Broadway shows these days?) Any smart producer would instead follow High Fidelity's lead and target males in their 20s who are into alternative rock.
I think Prada is a natural. The opening "I Want" song practically writes itself, there's a great character arc and romantic triangle there, and the costumes would be a blast.

I agree with the above:
Patti as Miranda, Sutton as Andrea, and Julia as Emily.
Man, they would sound awesome together.
It was awesome. - theaterkid1015

Posted: 12/18/06 at 10:36amI think this would make a fantastic musical. If Meryl were willing to do it it would be great. I think it would be cool if Andrea were an unkown. Marla Mindelle who just did a reading of "Piece" would be a great Andrea. Julia Murney in Emily's part would be wonderful. Maybe Mario Cantone as Nigel.

I'm all up for this.
I love the movie. I'm thinking of watching it later today.
I don't really think Miranda's character would work if she had the big belty numbers. Her characters such a subtle villain.
And, not to mention, the movie sympathises her. In the book, she's a total bitch.

Posted: 12/18/06 at 10:54amI couldn't watch the movie as the book brought back too many bad memories. I did hear they softened the character onscreen, however.

Posted: 12/18/06 at 10:57amBetty Buckley dazzles with her showstopper "My Character Would Never Sing, But Hey, It's A Musical", Sutton and Matt Cavenaugh have a lovely, sexy duet called "We're Indistinguishable From Big And Carrie", and Sutton's eleven o'clock number to her boyfriend (Christopher Fitzgerald) "Christ, You're A Sulky Bore But I'm Going To Beg Your Forgiveness Anyway" is genuinely moving.

Posted: 12/18/06 at 10:59amI like the idea of "Prada" as a musical, but I'd like them to use the book as the source material, which was different from the movie. I think Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman should compose the score.

They did.
(Meryl did the role brilliantly. I don't think anyone else could've played her to Meryl's extent. Everyone else would've made her look like a caricature. Unless, it was all the director and none of Meryl. I'm not really sure.)
And the boyfriend and Tracie's characters are completely rewritten. The boyfriend's supposed to be a teacher, but they made him some kind of line cook and then Tracie's just annoying. There's one part where I wanted her to bust into "Take Me or Leave Me", though.

Although I love Julia Murney, she is way too old for the role of Emily. Someone her age would not be believable in the position of an entry level assistant.
I agree that Meryl played the role to perfection in the film (although I think Michelle Pfeiffer would have been a better fit if they'd stuck more to the tone of the book,) but I could definitely see someone like Lupone or Buckley doing a great job as Miranda on stage.

Posted: 12/18/06 at 11:19amif they ever actually did this, I would also want them to use the book. The movie was HORRIBLE compared to the book and took out a lot of the good parts along with a lot of the emotion.

The ending of the book is still a little contrived. It may have happened in real life, but I just felt that it was premature. I won't say too much, but the movie's, while being more dramatic, is better.
Miranda's last line is perfect.
