I am a HUGE fan of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" and I listened to the soundtrack of the 2000 Broadway revival and loved it...
I was only 6 when this was on Broadway (so this wasn't the best fare for me)...but I am curious, was it as good or as interactive as the movie??

Tom Hewitt (Dr. Frank N Furter)
Alice Ripley (Janet)
Jarrod Emick (Brad)
Raul Esparza (Riff Raff)
Daphne Rubin-Vega (Magneta)
Joan Jett (Columbia)
Lea DeLaria (Eddie/Dr. Scott)
Sebastian LaCause (Rocky)
and Dick Cavett as the Narrator
PS: Matthew Morrison was a replacement ensemble member.

I saw Terrence Mann as Frank. I saw Kristin Lee Kelly go on as Janet. I saw Daphne and Jarrod, I saw a black male understudy for Lea DeLaria, Dick Cavett was the narrator, I saw Jonathan Sharp as Rocky and Matthew Morrison (now on GLEE!) as a phantom.
I remember it all, it was a real eye-opener with me being 12 and all.

It won't be though.
There were some cool theater tricks and stuff.

Chris Ashley followed this up with the Kennedy Center production of SWEENEY TODD starring Stokes and Christine Baranski that I liked quite a bit. The full-frontal Judge Turpin went a bit too far and I did not quite understand the black parasols but the rest was quite good, though Stokes as Sweneey-bot was slightly strange. ROCKY HORROR showed that he can direct musicals well, though I suppose ALL SHOOK UP (didn't he direct that?) killed that hope for many.

Never saw it, but I wish I could've.
And the people that stepped into this show, particularly as the Narrator... what a random, random assortment.

It was truly a guilty pleasure fun-fest -- I loved it. Until Xanadu came along, it was one of the most enjoyable shows I'd ever seen. I'll always be greatful to that revival -- it came along during a very difficult period in my life and it was better medicine than any doctor could prescribe!!!
I wouldn't go so far as to say it was the show that pushed Raul Esparza -- one of our GREATEST talents around, as far as I'm concerned -- over, but it certainly didn't hurt. He'd done a great stint as one of the replacements for Alan Cumming in the Cabaret revival.

They did sell an "Audience Participation Pack" - contained newspaper, a boa, a playing card, a flashlight, some confetti and a "participation" script. I still have it somewhere.
I have a vague recollection of the set - 3/4 round with a thrust, and the thrust rotated when the show began. Pre-show, it was movie theater seating with dummies.
I also remember that Alice Ripley took her top off at the end of "Toucha-Toucha-Touch Me."

Speaking of this show in relation to 9/11, Penn once talked about this on his radio show. I thought it was an interesting point of view...he said that he and Teller briefly stepped into the show after 9/11 as their personal response to the attacks. He felt the most patriotic thing to do was engage in a celebration, in New York, of all of the cultural and sexual freedoms the people who flew those planes into the World Trade Center despised.

It was a great experience for me. I saw it more times than I'm going to admit to on here (let's just say it would have been in triple digits very soon if it hadn't closed when it did)
I saw every incarnation of the cast there was, every understudy, every replacement. It was a great time and I do miss it.
