Did this actually happen? My friends and I saw Cabaret Friday evening (Aug 15th) and literally waited outside studio54 from 7:42pm-7:50pm and never saw dimming of lights outside. We asked the bouncer and he didn't know anything about it and when we asked if they dimmed the lights for Robin Williams a few days earlier he doesn't remember any dimming of lights for him either.

So did anyone see any dimming of lights for the legendary Lauren Bacall this past Friday evening? Studio54 definitely didn't dim their lights. I'm guessing it's optional?
I've read a few times that that theater doesn't dim their lights.
That does entail a lot of work so I can understand it he said sarcastically.
How can it not be optional?
You're right, it is optional, and not all theaters participate. As Roxy said, it's complicated and involves a lot more than flicking a single switch on and off.

What is the sense of it than?
Maybe because they are farther uptown they feel no one will notice it.

I was being facetious with my earlier remark.
Yup, Studio 54 was where I decided to catch Elaine's dimming, since it was close to NY City Center where I was going, and nothing happened. And there was a small crowd gathered waiting...

that's strange because when they dimmed the lights for Elaine Stritch a few weeks ago there was a video that went viral of someone who recorded it and the lights on the whole street went off for a good minute or so while a picture of Elaine was on the screen, and people were clapping, it was lovely.
Robin and Lauren surely deserved the same treatment.
Stritch was watching to make sure they did.
Studio 54 doesn't have a screen.
