Do you think JLT could play the Witch in ITW?

Today I was thinking about Into The Woods (remembering Bernadette's last note in Last Midnight) and thinking about who else could possibly play the Witch's part...and then I pondered..who could hit that last note? JLT probably could. I think she'd make an incredible witch (eh, no pun intended?). Do any of you think so? She's obviously an amazing actress and quite a fine singer.

There are a LOT of people that could play the Witch. The first person that comes to mind is Patti LuPone. JLT could play the role in a few years. And that last "note" isn't really a note. It's just supposed to be a scream and it comes out as a high pitched squeal.

The ITW Witch is perhaps the most incredibly written and amazing roles in musical theatre. The role requires much more than the notes, let alone one...

To answer your question, I'm not sure JLT is quite ready for the role. Although, its pretty near impossible to beat Bernadette Peters.

JLT's voice isn't strong enough. It has to be someone who can really hold her own, like Bernadette.

Patti would be great in this role. JLT could probably tackle it in a few years.

Anyone can play the role, I don't care, as long as it's not Vanessa Williams again. Yuck.

I don't know if it's the character that she plays, but JLT's voice seems so...cute and bouncy. And don't get me wrong, I love it...but the witch in ITW is sort of more like...a husky voice. Like Bernie's voice. It was just so perfect for the role. It wasn't COMPLETELY husky, but it fit the role.

Could she play it? Definitely. That girl can do anything. But the Witch has to have some years on her. You have to believe that she's been around to have battled with the Baker's father. So Jennifer is probably too young to take it on at this point in her life. Incidentally, Aigoo's description of "cute" and "bouncy" to describe Jen's voice were used to describe Bernadette Peters's voice early in her career.

Don't get me wrong I love Bernadette, but there's something about her that's always... Bernadette. Where as Vanessa Williams really got into the role and was MEAN. Everytime I watch the ITW dvd I always say to myself how much better Vanessea was. Just my thought. Anyway, I think Patti would be great in anything she does, she's the ultimate performer.

*JLT is jennifer laura thompson who is currently playing Galinda in Wicked. She was Hope in Urinetown and Ariel in Footloose.*

i think she could play whatever part she wanted. if she played the witch she'd probably make it her own and it would be very good.

I did not think anyone thought that Vanessa Williams was better than Bernadette Peters. Peters is in a league of her own. To even compare her to Vanessa Williams is a travesty!(sp?)

I heard that she wouldn't sing the songs the way Sondheim wanted her to, so he fired her.

"JLT's voice isn't strong enough." Do you know who JLT is? She's got one of the most powerful voices of her generation. She belts the crap out of Footloose and shows her legit stuff in Wicked and Urinetown, both of which have some fun belting stuff too. She'd be great in a few years. Too young right now.

I wasn't going to touch this thread, but being the Resident Jennifer Laura Thompson Guru, I thought I had to at least make an appearance. I, personally, think Jen could do anything she set her mind to, and would make it awesome, regardless of what it was. Perhaps when she ages, she would make a fine witch. It doesn't really follow the aestetic she has built up through her portrayal of the high-pitched sqeauky voiced heroines or silly girls.I think playing the Witch would be extremely refreshing and exciting, because it would show a completely different side of her, and that sort of thing would make me, super duper happy.

However, I would more like to see her play something like the Baker's Wife, because I think that part is juicier and I like it better then the Witch, whom tends to annoy me at times. Either way, I love her, and she can do absolutely no wrong.

And I should sleep b/c its 4:08 am and I am rambling...ramble, ramble, ramble...I love Jen.
