I'm a big fan of ITH - love the story - the characters - the music -
But having heard how he has worked on ITH since 3rd grade - do you think he has more material that he is going to publish - or will her pursue other interests -
Thanks -

Posted: 1/12/09 at 10:04pmI think yes... in regards to to music and lyrics for a Bway show, I can't imagine he would be successful unless there he has the ability to write a show without the rap/latin feel because I can't imagine another successful show that is almost identical to ITH (look at Young Frankenstein to Producers...)

Worst thread of the night.
And why - do you write everything - like this - and feel - that questions - don't need - question marks.
Thanks -

Posted: 1/12/09 at 10:22pmThis thread makes absolutely no sense...how can you ask if someone is a one hit wonder if they have only written one score...? No one knows what else he has in store so this thread is ridiculous.

The op isn't asking if Lin is a one-hit wonder, rather do we speculate he'll end up being one.
I don't think adding numbers to someone else's pre-existing musical really counts as "new work" (sorry Andrew Lippa)

"They say that just being relaxed is the most important thing [in acting]. I take that to another level, I think kinda like yawning and...like being partially asleep onstage is also good, but whatever." - Sherie Rene Scott

Posted: 1/12/09 at 11:42pmIs Working really Broadway-bound? I am so sick of shows being advertised as Broadway bound when they really aren't.

Posted: 1/12/09 at 11:52pmso do you guys think Lin Manuel is more of a creator or a performer? and by that... do you guys see him performing in other shows or do you see him more creating new works

Posted: 1/12/09 at 11:55pmI would hope not. It depends on whether Mr. Miranda can write songs not tied to the Latin stylings of IN THE HEIGHTS: if he can, he has, I think, the potential to become a new Stephen Schwartz (and Miranda's lyrics are far better).

"It Won't Be Long Now" is a gorgeous song, and it is not tied to Latin rhythms or hip-hop.
Mr. Miranda has a bright future as a composer.

Posted: 1/13/09 at 1:02amOoof, I'd credit Lin with better than the possibility to become the new Stephen Schwartz. I'm not sure to whom I would really compare him, though.

Posted: 1/13/09 at 4:50amI have no doubt that he'll work again, but if he repeats himself in his next that he fully writes (Working and West Side don't count) I imagine that critics (and audiences) will grow tired. I find In the Heights extremely grating. I imagine if he tries to write the same show, others will begin to see this flaw too.

Given the success of ITH along with the reports that he is sincerely a great guy, the opportunity will certainly exist. And a real gift is that his work (so far anyway) speaks to both young and more mature audiences.
Only time will tell. So lets wait and see.

Posted: 1/13/09 at 6:43amThe problem is with someone who has such a distinctive 'voice' is that anything other than a complete switch of styles will be accused of being 'same old, same old'. And does he have to get rid of his distinctive style to be a credible composer? That's a genuine question, by the way - what do you think? Do you think that the only way a composer can be successful in the long term is to be a musical chameleon?

I hope to see more of him, he is a great performer and a talented composer. It's good for him that he is getting all these other projects. At his age he still has time until he can't work anymore.
Also even if we don't see him in the Theater World he can become something outside Broadway.

Posted: 1/13/09 at 7:11amMaybe he'll use words that actually rhyme with each other in his next show.

Posted: 1/13/09 at 8:18amhis little one hit wonder has made him a part of musical theater history forever. He will be around a long time thankfully. It was about time that we had a fresh new musical and not another movie. (and i mean that in the best way possible. I am not ripping apart those shows)
