I think it has an audience. I would love to see it revived. It is a kid show and it could be great. Anyone else agree or disagree? I also think it is time

Posted: 1/20/09 at 6:04pmYes, Seussical does have a kid/family audience but can it compete with the Disney shows? It didn't stand much of a chance back when it opened, it probably wont know when Shrek is thrown on top of the Disney kid-magnets. It could be a great show but it just doesn't have much in it for anyone who isn't a kid, let it stay and prosper in community theatre.

Posted: 1/20/09 at 6:38pmI'd welcome a revival but only if they do the FULL SHOW and not the reduced kids version.
#5re: Does anyone want a Seussical Revivial?
Posted: 1/20/09 at 6:50pmThe original version was mostly delightful, but it is WAY too soon to attempt a revival. If the tour version were revived, I'd stay far away, however. It was something of a mess.

Posted: 1/20/09 at 6:53pmI disagree. The sets were a mess, but I thought the revisions were pretty great and that Cathy Rigby was wonderful as the cat.

I think that in a few more years when our economy is much much better than it would be time. If it were to happen now, it wouldn't work. Also we would need to stunt cast the Cat. I think a good choice would be Whoopi as the Cat in the Hat, Brian D'Arddio (sp?) Get an undiscovered actor to play Horton, get Sutton as gertrude and possibly Megan Mullay as Mazzie!
Sorry for all the Spelling stuff, but I think it could work!

Posted: 1/20/09 at 8:22pmNo. I am perfectly content with it thriving in Community and Regional theater.

Posted: 1/20/09 at 9:47pmIf it is revived, it has to be soon so Brian D'Addario can be Jojo. I've wanted him to play that role since I first heard him sing.

Children's Theatre is a tough sell on Broadway. It's hard to sell those weekday seats when school is in session.
I'm looking forward to the Off-Broadway Cast Recording.

Not really. I loved directing it, and my students simply adored doing it....but I wouldn't want to sit through watching it again.
It's sweet...but not really very good.
And I actually PREFER the Jr. version...gets rid of all the useless addition of unnecessary characters/storylines.
And I agree: the whole Mayzie whore life is a bit much...and then she abandons her egg?? Then finally gives it away??? OY.

I've been pushign for a simplified revival for a while. It's a fun show that was trapped in a huge Broadway body. Ideal cast?
The Cat in the Hat: Roger Bart
Horton the Elephant: John Treacy Egan
Gertrude McFuzz: Stephanie D'Abruzzo (Sutton would never do it)
Mayzie LaBird: Andrea Burns (Sherie Rene Scott wouldn't do it)
JoJo: Brian D'Addario
Sour Kangaroo: Capathia Jenkins
Mr. and Mrs. Mayor: Jan Neuberger and ?
Bird Girls: Nina Lafarga, Amber Efe, and Tracy Jai Edwards

I think topics like sex are fine in young adult, children shows. Gives them something that they need to learn that maybe parents (like my own) couldn't teach me.

LuPonatic,
a) It's a bit too small a role for her and
b) She has publicly stated that she only wants to originate roles at this point in her career.
#21re: Does anyone want a Seussical Revivial?
Posted: 1/21/09 at 10:16amYup. Wouldn't do it, because of those reasons. No doubt.

I completely agree! I hate the entire military thing. It always bores me.
#23re: Does anyone want a Seussical Revivial?
Posted: 1/21/09 at 12:19pmCathy Rigby was ok. I mean, she was playing Cathy Rigby and she's charming. But the revisions made the show more convoluted than it was on Broadway. The Cat in the Hat number was cut, which made the character more erroneous. The military subplot just suddenly disappeared. Scenes suddenly ended with no thread or segue into the next scene and didn't necessarily pick up where they left off. The use of the Cat as Emcee was a bit more sporadic and uneven, so the audience was left to fill some gaps on their own. And the staging of Oh the Thinks You Can Think had absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the show. It was such a mess. The Broadway production wasn't great (nor was it bad), but it was much easier to follow than the tour.

Posted: 1/21/09 at 4:19pmThe kid who was the original JoJo was really cute. Can't recall his name. Wonder whatever happened to him - and the subsequent JoJos. The one I caught (Bowen was his last name)later turned up in a bit part in a Sean Penn movie playing Penn as a kid.
