I was just going from memory about the release dates and that is my bad. I really did think it came out before Chicago.
As for it not being a musical. Yes, I realize that. But it has the campiness of a musical and I just think that audiences are more primed for it now than in the past. I do agree with you BrodyFosse123...people didn't get it.
Mark's cameo in that clip makes me a very happy girl. too cute (and I love the song).
"If we don't live happily ever after at least we survive until the end of the week!" -Kermit the frog "I need the money... it costs a lot to look this cheap!" -Dolly P. "Oh please, Over at 'Gypsy' Patti LuPone hasn't even alienated her first daughter yet!" Mary Testa in "Xanadu" "...Like a drunk Chita Rivera!" Robin de Jesus in "In the Heights"
"B*tch, I don't know your life." -Xanadu After that if he still doesn't understand why you were uncomfortable and are now infuriated, kick him again but this time with Jazz Hands!!! -KillerTofu
The biggest problem is that it's a "valentine" to a specific film genre.
Others that have tried this on Broadway with questionable results:
Young Frankenstein (a hit because of the name alone)
Singin' in the Rain (expensive flop)
I'm not saying it can't be done, but it's almost like trying to make a good film out of Broadway's A Chorus Line. It belongs on the stage, perhaps more so than any other musical. Certain things just don't translate well.
Most people are leaving out a very influential reason why it flopped: it opened the same weekend as Ang Lee’s HULK film. Granted that was even more of a flop than Down With Love (financially as well as artistically) it had a more marketable and popular image.
I think the film would make a very cute musical but could possibly have a short lived and forgettable run. It could adapt well, the costumes, sets and tempo would all work on stage and I’m sure there’s a reasonable way to have a split screen effect on stage, just build a dual set against black or isolated light whatever blah blah
I believe it could work very well I just don’t know how successful it would turn out.
Kristin Chenoweth or Sherie Renee Scott as Barbra
Shoshana Bean as Vikie
