BreeDaniel, give me a break about Kritzer over Orfeh. Leslie Kritzer owned that show. She was THE standout. She had the audience in the palm of her hand.
were are the nominations for Measure for Pleasure? I would have loved to see Michael Stulbarg nominated
I would have told you not to hold your breath for Orfeh Ruprecht, she's not the type of actress the "dentists" like to support.
I saw "Trailer Park" towards the end and Kritzer was beyondddd desperate in her bid to milk laughs. I did like Hensley (especially more than in Tarzan!), Orfeh and Linda Hart... if anything an ensemble award would have been nice.
I think it's important to remember that the inclusion of "Off-Broadway" fare just throws these nominations for a loop.
Right now, come awards night, you can expect everything to go to "Grey Gardens"!
Expect a different picture when the TONY nods are announced.

Wow, I didn't realize until after I read some of these posts that Color Purple was nowhere to be found. Hmmm. Maybe they think that CP will get a lot of Tony noms??
Also, it seems that the Drama Desk Awards are the Golden Globes of theatre.
ddtruitt, I agree that LaChanze has paid her dues and deserved a nomination. But something funky happened regarding THE COLOR PURPLE. How could it get zero nominations? I mean, come on. All of these categories and not one? This is shady.

Well, TCP will have a far better showing at the Tonys, especially since it won't have Grey Gardens, See What I Want to See, Thrill Me or the Pursuit of Persephone to compete against. Just by default it'll likely get 10 nods.
And while I certainly liked Mano's performance, frankly I enjoyed Alex Gemignani every bit as much and it's nice to see him acknowledged (not sure how he could be considered a "seasoned actor" though -- this is just his second Broadway show; Felciano actually has MORE credits than he does).

Perhaps the Drama Desk is recognizing that the musical is a piece of crap compared to the wonderful source material.

Also interesting that the only nod for Bernarda Alba was choreography.
How did they forget Daphne? She was ridiculous in that show.
I second the sentiment on Leslie Kritzer. She's a star.
Ha!
You'd better duck PJ after that one...
Maybe seasoned was a bad choice of words. What I meant to say, which I see now I didn't really put in my post, is he was a small part of a big ensemble in ASSASSINS and did an excellent job, but not everyone in that ensemble could get recognition, so this time around as a member of a strong ensemble, he turned in another fine performance and he's getting recognized.

Perhaps Color Purple never invited Drama Desk to see it?
I'm just brainstorming explainations here.

Maybe they have something against Oprah and want to prove a point!
Ditto on the omission of Michael Stuhlbarg.
Also, what happened to [title of show]?
I guess the nominating committee looked at TCP and said "HELL NO!"
*smirk*
But yes, it does seem fishy.
I disagree about Kritzer, Orfeh and Hensley were the reason people were going to TP multiple times in it's short run.
Honey, nobody was going to it. That's why it closed right away.
Hey, I enjoyed Alex's performance as well, and I'm VERY happy to see him get some recognition. I'm just *very* surprised that he was singled out.
I enjoyed Color Purple but in the same way that I enjoyed movies like Titanic and Independence Day. Sorry but even though the cast give it their all the material is not worthy of nomination or award.
Of course its going to be different with the Tonys as all these fabulous off-Broadway performances are not eligible. As for Mano... brilliant performance and deserved it. But Alexander brought something completely fresh and new to his role and deserves to be recognised too.
NO COLOR PURPLE or RABBIT HOLE...complete and utter CRAP if you ask me to leave 2 of the most moving and creative peices of Bway theatre this season. To completely shut them out is not excusable DD Awards. ESPECIALLY for LaChanze & the Rabbit Hole set...don't get me wrong, Seascape was nice and all...but the RH set was AMAZING!
Here's hoping that the TONY awards will get it right and realize both shows are highly deserving!
Where are Maria and Michael?
At least give them nods!
But, yay for Marc Kudisch, Michael Cerveris!
I agree with everything you said, kringas. But expect The Color Purple to get MANY Tony nominations. We all know how commercial those awards can be. (Oprah!! JULIA! pathetic...)
And, again, I think Alex did a fatastic job of reinventing The Beadle, and steals every single scene he's in. And I'm really happy to see him get recognition.
I just don't think he deserves to be nominated over Manoel, who ALSO reinvented his character, and whose performance is, in many ways, the driving force behind Doyle's vision of "Sweeney Todd".
Very relieved that TARZAN was totally snubbed.
However, I am livid that Sarah Jones was not remembered - or was she remembered last year when her show was off-Broadway?
LOTS of snubs here....
