Disney's Tarzan, officially opening May 10, 2006, did not invite Drama Desk nominators to see it at a preview before the April 23 deadline. Therefore, the Drama Desk will consider Tarzan in the 2006/2007 season. Well and Bridge and Tunnel were considered in previous seasons, though some design elements of their Broadway transfers were deemed eligible. The Lieutenant of Inishmore, which opened first Off Broadway in this season, was considered for its Off Broadway production.

Oh okay, I didn't see a disclaimer anywhere about TARZAN. Thanks.

The lack of THE COLOR PURPLE for THE WEDDING SINGER just destroyed their credibility.

No THREEPENNY? Fine.

No CYNDI? That's BS.

No LaCHANZE! Now that's just wrong, wrong, wrong!

Yay for SWIWS, though.

Has THREEPENNY become the new "What we do to stop jukebox musicals" musical?

Still doesn't explain TCP.

I really thought there would at least be a nom for LaChanze.

I guess Patti can clear room on the shelf.

Did it not say that Tarzan wasn't being considered this year? Or was that t'other awards?

Bridge & Tunnel was eligible when it was Off-Broadway, as was Well.

Will you geniuses read the press release before saying all these things that are answered right in it?

Wow, nothing for The Color Purple (and its cast).

Mentioned at the end of the nominations:

Therefore, the Drama Desk will consider Tarzan in the 2006/2007 season. I didn't see that disclaimer on playbill.com, I looked. It's not there.

Personally, I liked THE WEDDING SINGER leagues more than THE COLOR BLAND.

The Wedding Singer is actually a very good show. I really enjoyed it. I found it thoroughly entertaining. I didn't expect it to be recognized but I am not upset that it was.

I say congrats to The Wedding Singer for all the noms it picked up, especially Stephen Lynch - don't criticize it unless you've seen it (coughBSOcough).

I am shocked that LaChanze didn't get a nom. She was brilliant.

And I'm totally over the Threepenny snubbing. Not even nominated for best revival? You've got to be kidding me.

I think Orfeh did an excellent job in Trailer Park.. but you just can't convince me that Leslie doesn't deserve a nomination for throwing her self 1,000 percent into her role. She held nothing back.

She wasn't eligible as she was in the Public Theatre production two years ago (was she nominated then?)

WELL was considered two years ago when it was off-Broadway.

Garland Grrrl, can you not read?

WELL was eligible when it was Off-Broadway and is therefore not eligible for Broadway.

Edit: Margo beat me to it.

I think these nominations just further illustrate how unpredictable this season has become. There are really no clear frontrunners or runaway critical and financial hits. Just look at all the differences between these nominations and the Outer Critics Circle nominations -- and who knows how the Tony nominations will finally play out. I think it makes for a more exciting awards season when so many of the awards are still up in the air.
