Drama League Nominees

I'm surprises Equus didn't get a Revival nomination here or with the OCC. Of the revivals I saw this season, I thought it was the best.
Good to see Daniel Radcliffe on the performance list though.

"When he had the children's chair at the dinner table I DIED!"
Completely agree. That was arguably my favorite part of the entire trilogy, I cannot remember EVER laughing that hard in my life. I was basically in the lap of the person next to me because I was doubled-over in laughter. But I loved every performer, and easily could have seen nominations for any of them."
I know, I would pay just to see that scene again, best scene of the first two parts of the trilogy. It was all genius!
Anyway, I was shocked that Hadyn and Stephanie weren't nominated. It looks good for Karen at the Tonys as Steph and Hadyn are frontrunners.

My guess is that the Distinguished Performer award goes to Liza or Angela. Most likely Liza.
Also, while I love Block, her getting left off the list is hardly the biggest travesty the Drama League has committed. Remember last year when Kelli O'Hara was left off the list for South Pacific? Yeah...worse.

Oh, blah. Matt Cavenaugh is sleeping with Jenny Powers. Some people did like his performance? Why is it so hard to comprehend? He received a wonderful review from Ben Brantley.
With that being said, i think Josefina deserved this nomination over him.
re: Drama League Nominees#30
Posted: 4/21/09 at 11:34amUm, did you read the Brantley review? He raved for everything, which should be an indication of legit his review was. I still don't believe that those are his honest thoughts.

"Why is Matt Cavanaugh on that list?"
I'm wondering that about any number of the nominations. But so it goes.
Biggest disappointments - No Godot for revival and no Nathan Lane for performance.
Biggest shock - too many to list.
Still, it's not as laughable a list as the OCC noms.

Posted: 4/21/09 at 11:50amIMO, both the OCC and the Drama League awards are meaningless. Name me a show that has turned around because it won one of these awards. Face it, like it or not, the only award that has that clout is the Tony and even a Tony win is not a guarantee that the show's going to prosper. The sheer NUMBER of Drama League nominees vitiates any real effectiveness of the award. Okay, go ahead and shoot. See if I care.

Yeah, I don't know how they can nominate Lauren Graham and snub the work of people like Jayne Atkinson, Josefina Scaglione, Curtis Holbrook, Mamie Gummer, Lauren Ambrose, Andrea Martin, and Haydn Gwynne. Just absurd.
I'm glad to see Karen Olivo on the list as well, but I really don't get how Matt Cavenaugh made it in.
For Lauren Graham to be nominated for any acting awards for GUYS & DOLLS is indeed a travesty, if anything if there were theater razzies she would top my list.

Posted: 4/21/09 at 12:28pmDon't worry about it, kids. Nominations like these and the Outer Critics' have as much bearing on the Tonys as the Pheonix Online Film Critics' Society has on the Oscars.

It's hard to say who is more "deserving" than another. They all work so hard doing what they do up there on stage.
Even if some of the nominees are questionable (and yes, some of them clearly are) I'm going to let them all have their moment and simply say CONGRATS and thanks for doing what you do to entertain us! What's that saying again? "If you've touched even one person through your art...".
Piragua... not worried, and I do believe you called it wrong
Go Megan, Allison, and 9 TO 5! Hopefully Stephanie and Marc will have their times to shine during the Tonys.

- Not really. From what I recall, he had issues with Cody and George. And he felt the gangs were "too cute." He DID make it a critic's pick. But it wasn't an over the top rave.
re: Drama League Nominees#39
Posted: 4/21/09 at 2:20pmIn general, the Drama League nominates no more than 2 performers per show, so I don't think the Stephanie J Block snub means much since one of the 3 leading ladies of 9 to 5 was going to get left out. From a quick glance, I don't think that any show this year has more than 2 performers nominated.

" Here the gang members, led by Cody Green (as Riff, the head of the Jets) and Mr. Akram, make all the right moves, but you feel no internal combustion going on, no hormone-fueled hostility forever on the verge of eruption." -Brantley
While Brantley certainly didn't praise Green, his small problem was not Cody himself so much as the way the gangs were portrayed. He is WAY too nice here considering how bad Green actually is and how much the other reviews ripped him apart. He criticized acting choices when he should have critiqued the terrible singing and lack of ability to act. He definitely held back the vitriol.

Posted: 4/21/09 at 4:21pmRiff does not need to be a great singer. Have you heard the original Riff on the OBCR?

Lauren Graham is up there, yet Kate Jennings Grant and Craig Bierko aren't?
Same thing with Stephanie Block. How can you put Allison and Megan up there (who are both great, don't get me wrong) without including her as well? She is just as good.

The lack of Stephanie J. Block bothers me, considering Lauren Graham was able to pick up a nomination.
But then again, they just want more stars to come to the brunch or whatever.

"Riff does not need to be a great singer. Have you heard the original Riff on the OBCR?"
I suppose not, but it wouldn't hurt. But he DOES need to be a good actor, which Cody Green is not. I will say though, just because the original Riff wasn't a great singer doesn't mean that they should actively go with someone who can't sing if he is subpar in other areas as well.
re: Drama League Nominees#45
Posted: 4/22/09 at 2:47amWell that's your opinion. I found Green's singing to be more than serviceable. His acting could be better.
