I'm VERY disappointed that Bill Condon wasn't nominated for Best Director. That's a huge oversight.

They've gone pretty much where expected for Dreamgirls haven't they?

Agreed...two director noms for eastwood...none for Condon?!

Yeah...that is too bad about Bill Condon...he's getting pretty good mentions in most of the reviews so one would think he would be recognized (Clint Eastwood gets TWO nominations??? Come on!)
Also...there would have been HELL to pay had Beyonce not been nominated...even though her and Hudson have pretty much the same size role. It's not looking likely Beyonce is going to get an Oscar nom for acting so I hope she enjoys it.

I am thinking the globes will go with Borat or LMS for Best Picture, M or C.

I, too, am disappointed Condon wasn't recognized. But look who he was up against. If he were to get in, he would replace Stephen Frears for THE QUEEN.
There are lots of criticism for the direction of DREAMGIRLS: too explosive, too fast-paced, etc. For the same reasons, he was also praised. So because of the split, he was a borderline candidate for a nod - as far as award politics go.
We'll see what happens come Oscar time...

I have a feeling that the Foreign Press wasn't completely captivated by DREAMGIRLS: the Condon director snub is pretty big (and hopefully won't be repeated come Oscar nomination morning) but they also overlooked Jamie Fox (who could have been an easy nominee in the Best Actor Comedy/Musical slot) screenplay, and even a couple of the other eligible songs from the movie.
Still, its hard to complain with 5 nominations, of which it is likely to win 3-4.

No nomination for Pia Zadora? The Globes are dead to me.
PEACE.

She only gets nominated for films that were never released, and then dissolves the category so no one can ever win it again.

because she's the worst 'actress' ever on a screen in a major motion picture and she's also well known for her vocal acrobatics around the world... in one word: a Superstar...
These nominations don't come as big surprise for me since the Golden Globes are the domain of the HFPA and they have demonstrated time and time again in the past that nothing was worth more in their eyes than a big name... I mean... Beyonce? she was awful in Pink Panther! Come on! Eddy Murphy?! 'Best ANYTHING'?! really?! Condon was obviously not enough of a star to be nominated...
It wouldn't be so bad if the Oscars didn't take their cues from this pathetic starfest every year (except for Madonna who won for Evita in the Musical/Comedy category and didn't get the nomination for the Oscars)...
If Dreamgirls win an Oscar, even the smallest one, you can kiss musicals on the big screen goodbye! From now on, it will be packed with worthless big names to get the press falling all over themselves. You want to see Jersey Boys with the Backstreet Boys?

What an idiotic post.
You haven't even seen the film. Yet you run off like that...

I agree Condon should have got a nomination...There is no way Beyonce will win with the people she is up against. I may be so happy that Meryl got a nomination because she was amazing. J-Hud rocks and I want her to win so bad. She has gone so far and will have an amazing career.

coming from you, I take the 'idiotic' comment as a compliment :p
Seriously, it's got nothing to do with the film... I am not judging the film. I will AFTER I see it. But a bad actress is a bad actress... people give Awards to Parts, not the actors in it anymore! I'm sorry but the difficulty of the part doesn't necessarily make the actor selected for it good in it.
They could get Jennifer Lopez to play any of Meryl Streep's parts, that wouldn't make her Meryl Streep...
I think we both agree on one thing though: Condon is an excellent director (I mean... even CANDYMAN II was superbly directed!) and for ONCE he had a shot at anything, they don't nominate him because he never really made a 'big name' of himself.

For what it is worth, Beyonce is getting pretty solid reviews *as an actress* in DREAMGIRLS, though some critics are finding issues with the role of Deena as written (too much of a pawn). Jamie Fox's performance seems to be the "let down" if there is one in the film...

So... Leonardo DiCaprio is up against himself. And Clint Eastwood is up against himself. And Helen Mirren is up against herself.
Does this usually happen at the Globes? I thought awards shows either picked the better performance or combined them into one nomination.

Gelfing, what ridiculous thoughts.
They aren't judging Beyonce for THE PINK PANTHER. They are giving her a nomination for her solid (I'll even say gorgeous, brilliant, and surprisingly good) performance in DREAMGIRLS.
Hudson will win. She's the only LOCK for me. Quote me January 15.

If Beyonce' is really as good as poeple say, than Condon should automatically get Best Director for coaxing a performance out of her. Because she sucked beyond sucking in Austin Powers:Goldmember and Pink Panther.

I could see justification for Condon not being nominated for best director - despite Dreamgirls being nominated for best picture.
It's a very good film, but there are some clear directorial flaws. The ending for instance I really felt he messed that up. That silly melodramatic tag really pulled the focus away from where it should have been.
I think Condon has a problem with endings. He slapped a stupid sappy ending onto the end of GODS AND MONSTERS that was not in the novel it was based on - an ending that never should have been in the film.

I agree with the Dreamgirls ending being a bit sappy; and really the last 30 mintues felt a bit rushed --- but I still think he deserved a nomination; having seen all of the nominations for Best Directors --- I think Two Flags will win and Clint does not need 2 nominations.

No nomination for Pia Zadora? The Globes are dead to me.
Good point, Sueleen! Hard to take any artistic award shows seriously in the first place. How do you evaluate art? It is especially hard to take the Golden Globes seriously after they gave one to Pia Zadora.
New Star Of The Year 1982
McGovern, Elizabeth
Rollins Jr., Howard E.
Turner, Kathleen
Ward, Rachel
Wasson, Craig
Zadora, Pia - WINNER!

Clearly you've never seen anything from the Andie MacDowell ouevre or 90% of the films starring Diana Scarwid.
