Diana Scarwid was very good in the 1980 film, INSIDE MOVES for which she was nominated for an Oscar.
She deserves some kind of an award for her performance in MOMMIE DEAREST. Not sure which one.

I've always found her to be hit or miss. Usually miss. She was funny on Wonderfalls, though.
It's just ridiculous to assert that Beyonce gave the worst performance ever in Dreamgirls. Hell, even just by judging it against the other performances in the film she was't the worst actor in the bunch.

"So... Leonardo DiCaprio is up against himself. And Clint Eastwood is up against himself. And Helen Mirren is up against herself. "
How is Helen Mirren up against herself? I only see her name once in the Best Actress category.
"Does this usually happen at the Globes? I thought awards shows either picked the better performance or combined them into one nomination."
I don't this this ever happened before, but I could be wrong. I have seen actors nominated twice in the same year, but one for Best Actor and one for best supporting.

Yeah, how about that GODS & MONSTERS ending? You know, that film in which he won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay...
That being said, I agree I felt underwhelmed with the DREAMGIRLS ending. It simply "wasn't right" but I cannot finger why.

Posted: 12/14/06 at 12:01pmWell the whole "curtis looking at ____" bit, was confusing. What was he going to do? Just his presence in the last scene was unnecessary. It was more comic and it didn't work for me.

Posted: 12/14/06 at 12:03pmI think it's ridiculous that musicals are automatically lumped in with "Comedies," even when they're not necessarily comedies. If a musical is a drama, consider it a "Drama;" if it's a comedy (such as "The Producers"), THEN put it with the "Comedies."

Jennifer Hudson was on the Today show this morning. I am so happy for her and I wish her nothing but success but I am starting to find her brimming with false humility.

Posted: 12/14/06 at 12:13pmIt is musical or comedy - but that award distinction goes back to the early days of the Golden Globes when most musical movies were musical comedies. I'd be in favor of eliminating the distinction and simply slotting musicals with the drama or comedy catagories as they see fit - though as a fan of movie musicals - I must say I do like how musicals usually have the upper hand at the GGs. DREAMGIRLS will pretty surely win the Best Musical/Comedy Best Pic - but I doubt it would win in the drama catagory.

mb- and thats probably why the category (works) is set up that way...unless the musical is an EXTREME achievement and sweeps the nation- I do not believe a musical would ever win if it was nominated in the "drama" category.
If Hairspray (ill admit, doubtful) and Sweeney Todd were nominated next year. It would be VERY easy to put one in the Comedy category and the other in Drama.
But I believe musical OR comedy is the best way to have that category set up.

I think HAIRPSRAY is the first movie musical in a long time that is being made expressly as a "popcorn movie." Whether the producers admitted it or not - CHICAGO, RENT, PHANTOM, THE PRODUCERS etc were all banking on Oscar nominations.
I find that kind of refreshing.

Posted: 12/14/06 at 12:26pmI don't buy the "Or" argument at all. Either way, Dreamgirls is competing with Borat, which is ridiculous. And I don't see why a musical can't be considered a viable drama just because people sing it.

Beyonce is a horrific actress. She is horrible in "Dreamgirls". She is the weak link of the film. The girl could not act her way out of a paper bag.
Who the hell even cares about the Golden Globes. They're stupid and have nothing to with anything.
Have no fear Hudson will win the best supporting actress Oscar and Bayonce will take home an Oscar for the misplaced and silly "listen".

yeh, I dont think 'Hairspray' really WANTS an Oscar. Except may be Marc. :)
I think if anything Hairspray will be nominated for best song, sound, and if there is a stand out performance amongst the ensemble... may be a supporting actor nom.
I just think it will be a good time at the cinema. Its not trying to be something it isn't.
(but I dont wnant to sell the movie short - may be it will suprise us.)

I didn't see the pirate movie, so I cannot speak to that, but I could not disagree with you more about Foxx deserving a nomination.
IMO he totally phoned in his performance. For me he was the weak link and in no way deserves any special recognition. He's sharing the screen with others who are giving the performances of their lives and he's just there taking up space. Foxx's performance was just plain lazy.

Posted: 12/14/06 at 12:38pmI agree with Mischief. Foxx is the acting weak link in the movie, not Knowles. I've said it before, but I'll say it again - while I don't think Beyonce gave an Oscar-winning performance, I don't think she was bad in the film at all. It's interesting to me that most (if not all) of the scathing criticism of her performance has come from message boards and blogs. Most reviewers have spoken favorably of her.

Posted: 12/14/06 at 12:43pmI liked him 75% of the time; I think the ending took away from his performance --- I think the fact that he could not sing but in the "we're in a musical" scenes worked against him and in the end not having the chance to give have a longer dramatic moment worked against him. I thought he was good; not great --- having seen his and Depp's I would go with Foxx.

Mischief,
Nope, I haven't read it. But adapting anything to film doesn't have to BE the book/play it is based off of. That's why it's an adaptation. It's making the original art work for the big screen. Tell the story in the best suitable way for cinema.

"How is Helen Mirren up against herself? I only see her name once in the Best Actress category. "
Kec - Helen Mirren has 3 nominations in total - 1 in best actress in a film for the Queen and then two in Best actress in a mini series or film made for television - one for Prime Suspect and one for Queen Elizabeth I.

I've seen the movie twice already and Beyonce is truly fantastic. The material she was working with was much better than anything she could have ever done in Pink Panther. Dreamgirls is completely different, and Deena was MADE for her.
