I agree with the omission of The Light in the Piazza and I really don't get why everyone loves it so much. Ambitious yes, but extremely flawed in both book and lyrics, especially the book. It is extremely unfocused. There were many much better shows this year.

I don't agree with many of the BESTS and feel a few are missing. But, for the most part it's accurate. Specifically, I feel that THE PILLOWMAN deserves a much higher spot, it's genius.

The Pillowman was my favorite show last year.

Yes, I'm surprised by some of the shows they left out... but please, it's EWs theater recap... not the most credible source

Maybe DOUBT and PIAZZA were left out since DOUBT began as an OB show and I think PIAZZA had pre-Bway productions as well--but who knows? They have Owen Gleiberman for a movie critic, so all bets are off as far as I'm concerned.

Doubt made the list last year, in its off-Broadway incarnation.

No Doubt, DRS, or LitP. Waste of time to read. It is obvious that whoever wrote the list did not see the Tony's. Or has an inkling of what the popular shows are.
Just to add, what is their criteria for Show of the Year?

Are you saying that only Tony approved shows belong on best lists? Half of the shows on the list (JUDAS, ORSON'S SHADOW, RUBY SUNRISE, etc) are off-Broadway shows, thereby ineligible at the Tonys. And, as I said, DOUBT made the list last year, in its off-Broadway incarnation.

Well deserved; yay!
And Lennon was just not that bad. It wasn't as bad as In My Life, anyway.

I would have put Virginia Woolf first, closely followed by Pillowman. I am surprised, though, that Doubt wasn't on the list--even if it did make the list last year for OB.

FIRST OFF, IML was better than freakin' LENNON.
EW should stay with Hollywood gossip and movie stuff. B'way is too much for them.

Yeah, Piazza and Scoundrels were real deserving. They each get an A from me. I liked Sweeney, but #1. I mean, I'd rather give a #1 spot to a new musical or play.

I'm happy about Sweeney. Personally, I liked The Pillowman more than Glengarry Glen Ross, although I've only seen four shows on the whole list (the other one is Spelling Bee).
Were In My Life and Lennon really worse than The Blonde in the Thunderbird?

Liek, why wasn't Wicked on that list? whine whine whine.
I'm just being silly, and happy that Sweeney and After Ashley are on that.

Hooray for Sweeney! I think DRS should be up there for sure somewhere.
To those saying that it's only seen by people familiar with the work...
I saw the 3rd preview of Sweeney Todd with no prior knowledge of the storyline and followed it pretty easily. So did the other 5 people with me, of whom only 1 had prior experience with Sweeney Todd.

MEF, I did not know Doubt was up last year. Thanks for the clarification.
Still, some of the biggest hits of the season are not up there and its glaring. But hey, thats professional critics.

pukes at Sweeney Todd
Woman in White would of been much better or ven Light In the Piazza which is passable to listen to. Course I am biased as all of ALW's shows are phenomenal:)

I agree w/ SWEENEY TODD being # 1
I saw the show, without any prior knowledge other than the most basic of storyline, and was utterly floored by the brilliance of this show!
if Mr Cerveris and Ms Lupone don't win Tonys for this....
as well as the award for best revival

"John Lloyd Young as Frankie Valli in JERSEY BOYS "
Overrated. And he's going to win the Tony. And that just saddens me.
