Some glaring ommisions - and who came up with this order?

I agree with almost everything, except I'd put WSS on the bottom of the list and Singin' in the Rain on the top.
of course wizard of oz is #1.
i like that Seven Brides for Seven Brothers was on. why the hell was Beauty and the beast on?
ones that were missing: Victor/Victoria? Moulin Rouge? Guys and Dolls? Rent? Court Jester? White Christmas?
edit: actually, i would have had WSS at the bottom and Singing on the Rain not on the list at all.
The order is pretty out of whack...Sound of Music below Chicago and South Park?
They're grouping a lot of genres together in that list.
And since they included rock, how could the leave out The Song Remains The Same"?
Oh, and where was A Chorus Line?
(jk)
And Gigi, but not My Fair Lady? That is just wrong.
Where's Oliver and My Fair Lady?
I have more of a problem with the order than the selection.
That was an interesting list. Top 3, definitely deserved to be on there. I also love Hairspray, Chicago, The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and probably a few more I don't remember. I think it's interesting how Beauty and the Beast made the list. Sure, it is my favorite Disney Princess movie, but I don't understand how it is considered a musical. Yes, there were tons of songs, but it just seems weird, if you know what I'm saying.
South Park-WTF? If that made the list, than I certainly deserve a Tony Award for my performance in my 6th grade play that was the Trial of the Big Bad Wolf. I played one of the Three Little Pigs. I had a singing solo too, that I totally messed up. LOL!

Where is OLIVER!???
Who came up with this list? I disagree with half.
Mateo
Thanks for the link - EW clearly republished the list as it's dated 4/1/08 - so I didn't think to search for previous threads :)
You can't win them all. Top 25 out of 25,000 to choose from? And this is EW... mass media. There's bound to be the same identical story in 10 years. With a dozen two-hour TV specials in-between. Each dog will have its day. In the meantime, at least they published something for the non-musical theatre masses to mull over. Maybe some couple will decide to rent a Fred Astaire movie this weekend instead of the latest teenage-drivel.

And the commentary is just insipid.
(Paraphrased)
"Can you imagine a movie today making someone as fugly as Barbra a star!?"
"Fosse and Kander&Ebb stuff is gone, but it's ok because they took all that stagey crap and made it filmy!"
"Don't look for 50's rock in Grease! The title song is soooo disco!!!"
"Dancing with the Stars is amature night next to Fred Astaire and Ginger Rodgers!"

A pretty silly list. To include that recent Oscar-winning travesty and the serviceable but not exactly memorable HAIRSPRAY while excluding the magnificent SWEENEY TODD is simply idiotic.
That Busby Berkeley Disc has no business being on the list. It is a compilation of assorted scenes, not a musical.
I'm glad they included SOUTH PARK and LOVE ME TONIGHT. But that damn SINGIN' IN THE RAIN thing, and GIGI, and that lamer than lame BAND WAGON thing, please.
Thanks, mateo: I thought I was taking crazy pills.

Oh. I hadn't noticed that it was a retread. Thanks for pointing it out.
But still. HAIRSPRAY?
"The Wizard of Oz" is one of the most overrated movies of all time.
There. I said it.
(Although maybe I should have said it in the "Unpopular Opinions" thread.)
As for "Gigi" being better than "My Fair Lady," that's just blasphemy.
But lists like these are usually stupid. Of course, the publications or organizations always say they made their list controversial to get people talking about it. Well, if you want people talking about the fact that you made a stupid list, be my guest, but there must be better uses of your time.

OLIVER? MY FAIR LADY? MOULIN ROUGE? WHERE ARE THEY??? AND SOUTH PARK??!?

*please be an April Fool's joke*
They ran the list originally to tie in with Sweeney Todd's theatrical release. It's being rehashed again to tie in with the DVD release.
I think Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a much better film than the overrated Once.

MY FAIR LADY is one of the very worst films ever. Sheer cinematic deadweight. Audrey Hepburn's miscasting as Eliza Doolittle is the least of the film's problems.
Southpark? Are they kidding?

Didn't Sondheim call the South Park movie one of the best musicals in years?

South Park is a great American Movie Musical, one of the best ever.
