Did you enjoy it though Logan? How was the audiences reaction when you saw it?

I think GMB is soley Tracy's anthem to Baltimore- if everyone had joined in and it was a BIG numer... where do you go from there? You can either go simple or go full out. Too big- and the next few musical numbers may appear less spectacular. Save the extreme gaiety for later.

I too felt like the movie really got underway during R&TT.

It wasn't because R&TT was a big scale number that I felt the movie got a jump start- but more for the fact that the black ensemble was really introduced. The audience has already met her, but it really brings Motormouth and whats happening with Negro Day in to the picture- and I mean thats most the plot right there.

Did you not feel (again without too much detail) that ICHTB was a pretty big musical number? It isn't dancing all over the place- but its still has that 'old musical feel and charm.'

Travolta's first scenes shot were W260's so I dont know if him being 'uncomfortable with the role in the beggining' holds up. To me that is Edna's unsureness with herself. But Edna does make a journey- and its great to watch.

Yes, I certainly enjoyed it, will see it in the summer again and left the theater humming (and listening) to the tunes.

GMB is no doubt an anthem, but the support of a choir in the background seems unjust if it is only her song and they are not shown or embodied. Yes, it is sung from her pespective but it is about Baltimore, as in the place/people she is walking around and singing about without their involvment which didn't sit right with me. I don't think it would have set up an unfair precedent for the rest of the film, its the opening of a movie musical for Christ sake! Thats what they're all about!

Thank you for bringing up ICHTB, that is another dissapointment to me. Its another example where she is walking around performing in "movie musical" style but being completely ignored by the people she interacts with. If anything, this is the scene where things are heightened (like in the musical) and people in the hallways get involved. I think if it were closer to the musicals adaptation (with the cousellettes involved with bells) it would not have left people scratching their heads wondering "why everyone is singing" but rather would have better supported the scene and the feelings Tracy is going through.

Again, the scene works just as well as GMB, but it could have been better to me such as R&TT. Yes R&TT introduces the "black kids" but I think that it better intertwines the heightened musical performance to the plot.

I don't know what W260's, and don't much care. I don't care if Travolta's scenes were the last thing filmed and he had been in the suit and talking like Edna for 3 days, he is playing the character differently and not in a transformative way. It comes acrross awkward, especially if you don't know about the transformation coming.

The movie will do wonderfully and obviously my gripes couldn't be changed at this point, but I wish they had been in the initial production.

I realize that when creating something like this, it is probably all based on a "feeling" and once you are in final edits and watching something, you may realize that thing that everyone will bring up as a gripe later, but unfortunately it can't be changed.

It was a great film, I'm hoping I feel the same way once the initial shock of seeing an advanced screening wears off and I need to see it with the rest of the riff-raff this summer

well im glad you enjoyed it enough to see it again.

ICHTB was almost a complete daydream. or it becomes one rather, so It wasnt so much Tracy being ignored, but more Tracy ignoring everyone else. I Think thats what was funny. Tracy was all Link at that point and didnt care what was going on.

I think it was one of the funnier scenes/numbers though.

I am not writing this to change your mind, btw :) I am just enjoying having conversation with people who have seen Hairspray.
I want to hear everyone's thoughts.

Oh it was certainly funny, and yes she is ignoring everyone else, but it would have been cute if she had some back-up.

She seemed more deranged than in love due to the setup of the scene.

Oh, and Marc? Pay no attention to those of us who have a few problems here and there with the film. I suspect most of the people on this site want to see "Hairspray" turn out to be one of the best films ever made from a Broadway musical. Why? Because it is so much freakin' fun. Personally, you had me at Good Morning (actually, you had me when I first saw Tracy on that vertical bed. Really, really clever.) So we gripe and complain about this and that - even Travolta (I wanted Harvey) but in the end, I'll bet most of us will be there opening day.

I saw some of the filming in Toronto and even from those little snippets, I KNEW this was going to be big. Congrats again.

holly imposter, on oprah, you could hear a snippet of amanda singing:"life is dori-" she sounded GREAT, and i mean greatt. gahhh i cant wait for this movie. ill probably see it 10 times in theaters. nobody's seen a movie-musical like hairspray since grease. it just has that 'feel' to it.

Marc, you probably hear this all the time, but I totally love you. And am looking forward enormously to 'Hairspray' and have been optimistic about the project from the get-go and am probably sounding like a massive suck-up right now so shall stfu 'cos I'm not trying to, honest...

I am at the final dub of the movie right now, and even the blase heterosexual sound mixers are lip syncing to MISS BALTIMORE CRABS. I wish I had a video camera on me.

But BrodyFosse is right. "Space Jam" used computers to aid the combination of real world and 2D, but it wasn't CGI. CGI would be like "Toy Story" or "Meet the Robinsons". Or like if Edna were a fully realized CGI character, ala Gollum or Jar Jar Binks. Which would have made me possibly more excited for the movie, if possible. Imagine the possibilities.

Well I am still excited but I knew as soon as I saw the trailer that Travolta was going to be a bust. I am anxious to see if Zac Efron can play Link like Matthew Morrison, who is unbelievable.

As I said in all of my posts, I enjoyed the film and plan on re-viewing it in the Summer. I also stated that everyone did wonderfully and I enjoyed the movie. My "gripes" are few and I would not say they made this into a bad film.

Marc, I respect your work so much and just watched "The First Wives" club on DVR today and freaked out when I saw your name in the credits. What a film! Ugh, Bette makes my life.
