Can a person really be sick for a whole month from having elevated levels of mercury?
Anyway, Jeremy Piven probably got lazy when he realized that he had to do the show every day for 5 months, so he chickened out and made a weird excuse. Whatever.

Thanks for that, Jordan. I would never have seen that any other way. I'm not sure you can really say she "dissed" him though. She only told the truth (and sounded as though she was holding back quite a bit as well). That's not disrespecting him.
IIRC, Piven was already out of state when he called to say he wouldn't be in the show that night and never returned, If anything, I think she went easy on him.

I seriously think Piven was in over his head. I think he probably was suffering from severe stage fright, to the point of incapacitation. He didn't know any other way out of it.
I say that, because I've been watching "Mr. Selfish" (aka Mr. Selfridge), and he is giving a limited but VERY committed performance.
I don't excuse his behavior for a minute, but I think I understand his predicament a little better now. Still, his excuse falls nothing short of "the dog ate my homework."
Pathetic, to be sure.

The funny thing is I thought Piven gave a really wonderful performance. He seemed completely assured in the role; Moss was unsteady at the first preview, and it wasn't until I saw the show with Norbert and William H Macy that she turned in a great performance.
It's a shame all this happened because I would have liked to see him on stage again.

In addition to the doubt about his illness, Piven was known for staying out late nights - and foolishly used the car provided him by the company to do it, so there were records of it. Even if he was truly sick, or not up to the part, his exit strategy was very poorly planned, and left the entire company in the lurch.
Given Moss' comments last night, and Esparza's impromptu curtain speech after Piven had officially left the play, it seems clear there was a whole lot of discord in that theater.
...but it did give us WH Macy.
eta for Whizzer: I thought he was pretty good as well. I don't have any personal knowledge of this situation, but it's possible he simply got bored - or the well-documented late nights were catching up to him. I also agree with you about Moss, but sometimes less experienced actors need to be steadied by more experienced counterparts. Stage chemistry is an odd thing - or maybe she simply got better with time.

By the time I saw it a second time I enjoyed Moss' performance quite a bit. She was comfortable in the role and had great chemistry with Norbert. She altered her performance with Macy, and it was him that she was most effective. Macy was such a broken down man and she used him, and then went in for the kill.

I thought Piven was pretty good, too- but, of course, not comparable to William H. Macy.

I just think it was not working for him, but instead of saying I cannot do this and breaking his agreement and taking it like a man . He lied and tried to play everyone

I thought Moss was great! I actually thought she and the show were best with Butz. I thought Macy was a supreme letdown. He just didn't do it for me.

I saw Piven one week to the day before he bolted. I was shocked when I heard about him leaving. I saw no sign of unprofessionalism or lack of enthusiasm in his performance. He was excellent.
I'm glad Elizabeth got to vent about it, however belatedly. He was a jerk.

I don't think the unprofessional conduct was visible onstage. It was the other 22 hours a day.
