I’ve been catching up on Elsbeth lately, and Broadway fans — this show really keeps delivering little gifts. The latest episode in particular felt like a love letter to Merrily We Roll Along without ever saying it outright. The setup involves a late-night talk show, and I immediately clocked that the show’s theme music was straight from Merrily — and that was just the beginning.

From there, it centered on three people who started out together in show business and drifted apart (sound familiar?), Colbert’s character is listening to the cast album, and Lindsay Mendez turns up as the detective on the case. It’s one of those episodes where you can feel how much the writers know and love the material.

If you love theatre, it’s worth adding to your watch list — it’s a solid show on its own, but those little Easter eggs make it even more fun.
