there was a group of girls who were talking before the movie about mooing and I was so frustrated by them. Thank goodness they didn't actually do it. Em, did you stick around till the end of the credits?

lol, as am i atrias, as am i.
er, I was part of that group you are talking about. Were you right behind us in line? We were just goofing off with the mooing thing, we didn't mean any harm.
I think I was sitting a couple rows behind you. No harm done.
I very rarely post here, but I've been reading these boards at least once or twice a day for well over a year now. I feel like I know many of you, even though you guys have had no idea that I've been here!
Your opinion, Emcee, is one that I have come to respect and look for in many different cases. I am extremely emotionally invested in this movie as well, and have been torn apart all week by the reviews I've been reading. I've been looking forward to your review, knowing it would some how put me at ease, and it truly did. Thank you. I think now I might stop reading reviews until I see the movie, so I will go in feeling just like I do now, after reading what you had to say.
I've been looking forward to this movie making at least a small splash at the Oscars since the project began. After reading the reviews, I've been so distressed that not only, the movie may not be an Oscar contender, but also that it would be received negatively by moviegoers. I thought that instead of bragging about how wonderful the show is, I would have to defend it. However, now I realize that Rent is not about the academy, it's about the people it touches. The lives it changes. This review has left me no doubt that this movie will spread the message of Rent, in a very wonderful way. Whether or not the Oscar nominations come through, the message is all that matters.
Thank you for not throwing popcorn at us We're just excited fans overwhelmed by the movie, really. What amazes me is how RENT has the ability to bond people. I was wit hthe most amazing, fun group of girls, and after standing in line with them for 5 minutes it was like we'd been lifelong friends. It's really cool.
I'm also amazed at how Em's opinions and reviews are taken as the word of God Quite a lot of power you have, Em! Don't know how you do it!
Very nice, Em.
I'm glad you were able to take the time you needed and post how you felt.
I will, as always, make up my mind when I see it.
It is true, however, that I am much less anxious after your heartfelt thoughts.
(And Munk's change of heart, maybe this is a "second time" time of movie. )

How graphic is it, by way of drug use and nudity, and all of that? Do we see anything more than Idina's ass, or Mimi getting high?
I saw Rent yesterday at 2:00! I really liked it.
I would say it was fairly graphic - Mimis drug scene was INTENSE. And they don't shy away from showing the homeless and putting it right in the audiences face. No other real nudity though, besides the provocative OT scene.
Idina's butt and Rosario's...small outfits were the only nudity.
Anyone want to reflect on whether those are "Maureen's" tattoos?

Seriously... your review is the only one I've read, aside from hearing about random short ones written by critics who probably haven't seen the movie.
Thank you for that, Emcee. Your review is really the only one I have taken to heart. It's coming from the heart of a tried and true RENT fan, like me. Not someone who 'kinda liked the show' or is 'omgomgomg the biggest Rent fan ever!!!1111oneoneone'. It's from someone who takes this show to heart the way I do, and is looking forward to the movie for a new experience. And your review added to my optimism for seeing this movie.
Thank you.
Wonderful review Emcee. You've given alot of insight to the film and I can't wait (even more so) now to see it in a couple weeks!
BRAVA, emcee.
i, too, have been waiting for your opinion of this movie--not because you have some sort of authority over my opinion, but because you are one of few people on this board who see things and genuinely form an opinion, not just a recitation of whatever they were predisposed to feel. you are honest, insightful, and intuitive, and your review/opinion never comes across as preachy or pretentious. you give credit where credit is due, even if you're biting your tongue while doing it. and you also keep from giving credit simply based on previous works, you really pay attention to specific performances.
many other RENT reviews were scaring me off a bit; i had plans to see it opening night, but after reading so many disappointments i was debating a delay in my viewing. but after your take, i am sure that i do NOT want to miss this movie. it may not be what we all thought it would be, but it is what it is, and it IS "rent".
thank you!
Well, since no one else commented on it, I want to say my thoughts. I am both a little angry and happy with munk !!! His review started all the doubts, fears and stress on the board about the film! He is a very good and trustworthy member and I respect and think highly of him, that is why his negative review of the film troubled me and others, because it came out of his love for RENT. And what does he do ? He sees the film a second time and changes his opinion. Now the film is beautiful! I am really happy he changed his mind, but after causing all that doubt and sadness, to just say "oops, my bad", shows a bit of irresponsibility. I don't want to be misunderstood, I still love and respect him, but honestly, I don't think I'll ever again take seriously another review from him ! And I am really saying all of this with love, as if i was speaking to a friend !
:) ::hug::
