Per a friend who was at the RENT closing last night, Emma Hunton recently turned down Elphaba to star in DINER on Broadway next year. I'm assuming in the role that Ellen Barkin played in the movie. Thoughts?

Emma Hunton was going to play Elphaba? Interesting. She was a star in the NEXT TO NORMAL tour, so I hope this could be her break (I'm not familiar with that movie or a forthcoming adaptation though :P). I'm just saying I look forward to seeing what she does.

Give me claws and a hunch, just away from this bunch.

Hunton is indeed doing DINER, though I seriously doubt that she was offered WICKED. She'd been extensively involved with DOGFIGHT for years until Joe Mantello became involved and wanted to re-cast her role, so I have a hard time believing he'd hand her a plum lead in one of his other shows.

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

^Was she workshopping Marcy or Rose in DOGFIGHT?

That is truly interesting! I would assume Marcy, but, oh my, if it was Rose, wow that would have been a treat!

Hunton played Rose in every developmental incarnation of the show from the very first reading onward, up until Mantello became involved late last year.

She played Rose in several readings of DOGFIGHT.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

WOW! She would/could make a GREAT Rose! I loved Lindsay, I can't help but think how equally amazing she would have been!

I think that Emma is a very talented young woman and I'm glad that she is going to originate a role next year. She just turned 21...let her originate some roles. She can do Elphaba when she's like 24.

I had heard she was offered Elphaba as well. When she posted on twitter this weekend to stay tuned for exciting news I thought it would be that announcement. Guess not! This could be interesting. She's a great talent.

Her voice is shot to the point of where she could barely get through numbers during her stint in Rent, so I HIGHLY doubt she'd have even been right for being considered as Elphaba.

If she even was offered it, I'm glad she was smart enough to know her limits and turn it down. I enjoy her as a performer, and in good voice - she's wonderful, but she needs to seriously rest her voice or risk losing it for good.

Met her at a party a few weekends ago in HK. She was drinking and smoking like crazy. No wonder her voice is shot.

If you heard her recently, you wouldn't buy it.
