I first saw Equus on Sept. 11th, whil eit was still in previews. When the reviews came out, many people's big complaint was the Kate Mulgrew was over-acting and that she seemed to be in a different show entirely.
I went back and saw the show again over Christmas break and her performance had been way toned down. I don't know if it was just that day, or if maybe she read all the reviews and decided to take it down several notches. She was much better the second time, and my brother and his girlfriend who were seeing it for the first time, said she was one of their favorites.
On the flip side, Calolyn McCormick was pretty dreadful the second time around, and I thought she was much, MUCH better the first time. Maybe she was just having an off day. It happens.
Either way, its a great show.
She's playing Maria Callas at Papermill. I'm really upset I can't attend.
Funny you would mention Kate williep, I saw the show for the first time last week and I thought she over did it, ALOT.
I hadn't read the reviews, but maybe when you saw her the second time, she was having an 'off day' for her.
She was really over the top last week and I thought her accent was inconsistent, say the least.
I think I was the only person who enjoyed Mulgrew in EQUUS.

I thought she was in a totally different play as well. Actually, I just re-read Equus on the subway today, and I hope to see it again before it closes. Good to know the actors are still evolving in their roles. I thought the girl who played the girlfriend was a little one note as well, but after re-reading the play, I think that might just be the writing.

I just saw it for the first time yesterday. Kate Mulgrew, whom I love as Janeway on Voyager, I felt to be always on the brink of over-the-top. Her hand gesturing was way overused and the stances she held and everything, I felt like she was playing Captain all over again. However, that came nowhere close to diminishing how great I felt she was. This might sound creepy but her voice was so pleasing to hear in person and had the "sound" of someone you could imagine being a psychiatrist. And I didn't even notice she was in Equus beforehand! You can imagine my surprise as she emerged from the shadows onstage with that wig so similar to her Star Trek hair!
If there was a weak performance yesterday, it was from the actress playing Mrs. Strang. She didn't ruin anything for me, but she seemed to stand out from the rest in a negative way. And the friend I went with said the same thing about the accent Ftworthguy.

I thought Kate Mulgrew was fine. Nothing spectacular, but good. But I think I was too busy despising Carolyn McCormick to give Kate any bother.
But I do agree. She was awful as the mother.
I saw the final preview and I actually really, truly liked Kate Mulgrew. I actually WASN'T a fan of Richard Griffiths. But yeah, I didn't think she was as over-the-top as people are saying she is. As for the rest of the cast besides Daniel, I really didn't like the acting all that much.
What happened to the Kate Mulgrew of RYAN'S HOPE? Or heck even MRS. COLUMBO??
