I think the Menier is not a member or affiliate of the Society of London Theatres and so productions at the Menier are not eligible for Olivier Awards. This is like the Tony Awards which are limited to shows which played in certain theatres.
Menier produced shows which have transferred have won awards.
So Assassins was not eligible.

Urinetown getting no nominations is a massive kick in the teeth to what was, in my opinion, an exceptionally conceived, directed, designed and performed production that closed far too soon. You will be hard pressed to find a more polished and complete piece of musical theatre in the west end for a very long time.
the fact that 'sunny afternoon' and cats pick up nominations and shows like urinetown, city of angels and dirty rotten scoundrels are almost completely snubbed is testament to how much of a joke the oliviers have become.

I must admit, I was very surprised not to see Eva in the list of nominees: she carries the show, and magnificently at that. I saw Lea Salonga, and numerous replacement Kims, and Eva is definitely in the top three or four; but it is definitely her own take on the role. She struck me as tougher and less of a victim than the way Kim was directed in the original staging.
The other glaring omission, imho, was Natalie Mendoza who was utterly sensational as Imelda Marcos in the London version of Here Lies Love. If it were down to me, she would actually take home the award.
On the other hand, I found Gemma Arterton extremely weak -vocally and dramatically- in Made In Dagenham. Certainly not my idea of a musical leading lady. Ah well.

Posted: 3/10/15 at 10:03amYes, Menier productions or performers can't be nominated as long as they don't transfer into West End. My only big disappointment is City of Angels not receiving any cast nods.
