Ever Told "Get a Life" ?

My friend was very insulted when somebody told him to "get a life" because he's such a big fan of Broadway and its shows. Why are people so cruel? It's OK in our society to attend a NY Yankees game every week and wait around for autographs but when you wait outside theatres for autographs and photos, you are considered a "weirdo". Were any of you insulted too?

I posted a video of myself on YouTube wearing these "popular" pants (they were a pretty sexy fit), and for some reason people also showed contempt towards me Ever Told 'Get a Life' ?.

"My friend was very insulted when somebody told him to "get a life" because he's such a big fan of Broadway and its shows. Why are people so cruel?"

Because, sorry to say, that's the nature of the beast. The best thing is to not let it get to you.

The next time someone tells your friend to get a life, he should say, "I've already got one, thanks, and I'm happy with it."

Next time someone tells me to get a life I am going to run around manically singing "I'm Alive" :).

People are rude. People also don't understand things that they don't know. I don't get people that play role playing games, or those that go to Sci-Fi conventions. I don't understand stage dooring for every show attended-- for athletes, for actors. I think it's odd -- but at least I'm not rude.

The bigger point is that your friend would CARE that somebody said that. A stranger, I presume? And if not, not much of a friend. Unless, of course, your friend is one of the obsessive types -- then maybe the friend was trying to be helpful. Ever Told 'Get a Life' ?

How would a stranger know he was a big fan of musicals?

Now if he's one of those "I only listen to musical theatre and every other kind of music sucks, especially RAP!!!!" types, then yeah, he probably does need to get a life.

And what if he does think that every other kind of music sucks, especially RAP!!!? Why is that not ok?

Ugh, exactly Phyllis. People who proudly proclaim they don't listen to anything but musical theatre (and solo CDs of musical theatre performers) deserve the insult. Especially the American Idiot fans who never once listened to Green Day before the show opened.

Especially since "musical theatre" isn't one monolithic sound.

Agreed with the two of you.

As for general remarks about "getting a life," whether realistic or playful, I just respond with "Go F**k yourself" and that usually does the trick.
#13

Ever Told 'Get a Life' ?

The other obvious response is: "You worry about what kind of music I listen to, and you think I'm the one who needs to get a life???"

Ever Told 'Get a Life' ?

We still don't know the context. My experience with the tiresome "I don't like to listen to anything but Broadway" crowd is that they make it a point to go out of their way to let you know (usually with an undercurrent of superiority). It's similar to people who need to let you know that don't have/don't watch tv.

You mean, the people who say it with the emphasis on the "own" or "watch?"

Ever Told 'Get a Life' ?

I went to see "Inception" last night...and I cannot believe that people are spending 21 dollars to see something so bad.
I'd have never gone to that to begin with(my friends wanted to see it and I basically couldn't say no)...but let me say that as much as I sometimes get bored at Broadway shows...I LOVE Broadway and I don't care what people say!

INCEPTION was a great movie, you clod.

I guess the emphasis would be on their I. As in, "I don't own a tv" or "I don't own a tv," as though it's some kind of medal of honor. Good for you, but it doesn't make you a better person. That sort of thing.

Ever Told 'Get a Life' ?

I'm probably one of those people who is often told 'Get a life", though a lot of my friends roll their eyes lovingly as I blurt out Broadway trivia or things about the stars/shows I am currently loving. I think that if your friend is offended by it, perhaps its because they are not secure in their choices and realize that they need to be a bit more well-rounded. Although Broadway is most of what I talk about (it's like diarrhea of the mouth...it just slips out!), I realize the need to be able to talk about other things than just theater. It's something I'm working on constantly, this whole "getting a life" thing!

Muscle - if you COULDN'T say no to your friends, then you've got the same issues that the op's friend does.

I don't HAVE to do anything I don't want to. (Well, except pay taxes and die.)

I love Reg's response.

Phyl, what if I don't own a tv, but sometimes watch a tv show online?
#22

Ever Told 'Get a Life' ?

It's not about not owning a tv. There's just a certain kind of folk who somehow thinks that not having/not watching tv somehow makes them superior to the masses.

ghostlight, if you tell me what tv shows you watch online I'll tell you if I'm judging you or not. Ever Told 'Get a Life' ?

Ever Told 'Get a Life' ?

I'm pretty blunt about this -- I don't particularly care to hear about some of my friend's hobbies, so I imagine that's how they may feel when I talk about theatre. Because of this, I just don't talk about theatre around them if I know it'll bore or annoy them. It's not that what they do offends me. I'm just not good at feigning interest, and I try not to be a big fakity fake.

However, I have been one of THOSE non-TV watching people. I don't think I'm better than someone just because I don't watch TV; I think I'm better than them because I don't sit on the couch all day letting the plasma/cathode ray go to my head. Ever Told 'Get a Life' ?
