Let's face it, most musicals don't exactly from original sources. A majority is an adaptation of some sort, but mainly literature. Most of them which are extremely popular, such as Oliver! or Phantom Of The Opera. Here's my question: Has the same book ever been adapted into a stage-musical twice? I can only think of Peter Pan (the well-known musical and a few others later on), A Christmas Carol (A Christmas Carol: The Musical and Scrooge), and Phantom Of The Opera (the popular ALW show and the lesser known Maury Yeston adaptation). I was wondering if anyone could think of any others, and if so, which book-to-musical adaptation did you find better?

"The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," if you count THE WIZARD OF OZ and THE WIZ.

"Alice In Wonderland," if you count ALICE, WONDERLAND, and the Disney film that has already been adapted (Jr.) and the upcoming musical based on the Burton film.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

There are at least three musical versions of IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE.

And at least four of THE GIFT OF THE MAGI.

"Phantom Of The Opera (the popular ALW show and the lesser known Maury Yeston adaptation)."

Don't forget the one that got the ball rolling - the Ken Hill adaptation.

There are at least 5 adaptations of Phantom of the Opera that have received professional productions and recordings. ALW is the last and after its success will probably be the last. Yeston's was actually completed before ALW's, but waited for the national tour until after ALW's.

3 professional Beauty & the Beasts with recordings.

I have see two "It's a wonderful Life" one with lyrics by Kathy Lee that see keeps hoping to bring to broadway. But, I know there are at least 2 other licensable versions.

My guess is that almost every popular book in the public domain (no royalities) has several musicalizatons. Dracula, Zoro, and Wuthering Heights just came to mind with at least 2 recordings.

There is another musical version of A CATERED AFFAIR?

Didn't know.

What is the story behind the non-Bucchino version?

CapNHook: You don't have to count "The Wiz". Frank Baum actually wrote the book for a musicalization of "The Wizard Of Oz" which ran on Broadway, then on tour for many years coming back to broadway multiple times. I own a CD set of the songs which are a compilation of individual songs from many sources from wax cylinders to 78s.

I have add this link: For additional versions of "It's a (Stevie) Wonderful Life", "Two Gentlemen of Verona (Chicago)", "(John) Romeo and Juliet (Oakes)"

http://www.troubie.com/public/past_shows.html

The Troubies do "the great works" as musicals with bastardized versions the songs of a single group/artist. I love the titles... Oth-ELO

For "Alice, In (One-hit) Wonderland" they tapped multiple artists, much like "Menopause: The Musical" does.

If we count operas (and why shouldn't we?), the examples become numerous:

LA BOHEME/RENT
MADAM BUTTERFLY/MISS SAIGON
ANNA KARENINA/ANNA KARENINA and ANNA KARENINA (ballet),
etc.

Jekyll & HYDE - many of the other adaptations coming AFTER Frank Wildhorn's version.

A Tale of Two Cities has two major musical adaptations - in the '60s in London known as "Two Cities" (which was somewhat a success) and of course the Broadway Santoriello version in 2008, and I'm sure there have been others.

There's THE GAY LIFE and the Tom Jones version of ANATOL that's been bouncing around for some time, not to mention the multiple versions of TOM JONES (no relation).

Also, AH, WILDERNESS! has been musicalized on stage with TAKE ME ALONG and on film with SUMMER HOLIDAY, and the recent London musicalization of GONE WITH THE WIND is not Harold Rome's earlier version. And, the musical film of MY SISTER EILEEN is not WONDERFUL TOWN.
