Quincy Jones conducts the orchestra with lead vocals by Patti Austin & James Ingram and a full fledged children's chorus. Just watch Quincy really get into it as he is conducting. Patti's vocals are amazing on this....the whole thing is infectious and gave me goose bumps. Just wanted to share this amazing song written by the gone but not forgotten R&B legend, Mr. Luther Vandross for this classic musical.

^I'm pretty sure music and lyrics for that song are by Luther Vandross.

Wow, it's true! I never knew that Luther Vandross wrote that number but IBDB reveals that he did. It also reveals that Butterfly McQueen was Standby for the role of Addaperle. Never would have believed that!

I've always thought Quincy's arrangements of (the bulk of the stage version of) the score were the best thing about the film. I'm surprised no revival has ever taken advantage of them. (Or have they? Someone alert me.)

Love the song (yes, it's by Vandross), and love the stage show. Some of the best Broadway music of the '70s.

This rendition of it is terrific. Thanks for sharing it, Carlos!

After scrutinizing this poster for relevance, I'm at a loss. I genuinely would like to know what this poster has to do with THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ or even the production of THE WIZ. Any help appreciated!

The song originally appeared on one of Luther's earliest albums I think. The poster frpom the show is of the Tornado. In the show the tornado was a woman (Felicia Rashaad originally) who moved around the stage enveloping it in the fabric connected to the back of her costume. It was quite cool. Saw the original production 3 times.

The very talented Milton Glaser designed the logo for the original 1974 production of THE WIZ. And yes, the female figure is of the tornado...pure genius and it's iconic.

I'm glad you guys have enjoyed the clip as much as I have...it IS a beautiful performance. I think what gets me the most is Quincy's complete and utter infectious surrender to the music....he looks like he's just reveling in it, and those kids bopping back and forth gets me every time!

Here's the 1978 film version. Choreographed by Louis Johnson and performed by Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Nipsey Russell, Ted Ross and Company.

@ RainbowHigh23, thanks for sharing that clip from Luther's 1972 album with his group Luther. I have that album...god rest his soul but that man was a genius and he's peerless. I was heart broken when he passed.

@ g.d.e.l.g.i. YES! I wholeheartedly agree that Quincy's adaptation of the score was one of THE BEST things about the film, and to think he originally did not want to do the film!

I don't think his charts and arrangements were ever used for a stage production.

Legend has it ( which may mean it was just PR ) Quincy used every available microphone in the city to record the score. Some think it's overproduced. I disagree. It's just lush in a time movie musicals were being scaled down.
