Did anyone notice that New World Stages is going to have "Evil Dead: The Musical" starting in October?! Co-Directed and Choreographed by Hinton Battle?! I really don't know what to think...
From Telecharge:
Evil Dead: The Musical, a ‘dis-arm-ingly’ riotous musical comedy based on Sam Raimi’s 80s cult-classic horror films, unearths the old familiar story: boy and his friends take a weekend getaway at abandoned cabin, boy expects to get lucky, boy unleashes ancient evil spirit, friends turn into Candarian Demons, boy fights until dawn to survive. As musical mayhem descends upon this sleepover in the woods, “camp” takes on a whole new meaning in uproarious numbers like “All the Men in my Life Keep Getting Killed by Candarian Demons,” “Look Who’s Evil Now” and “Do the Necronomicon.” Buzzing chainsaws and dancing demons add to the frenzy, slaying audiences with this tale of lust, love and dismemberment.

It's still sounds better than LEGALLY BLONDE.

Or The Wedding Singer for that matter.
Honestly, I'll consider seeing this one. I love the movies and Hinton Battle's involvement is intriguing. He seems to have a flair for the campy after his turn as Sweet in "Once More with Feeling."
I adore all things 'Evil Dead', so making it into a musical is the best possible step for me. The real problem is making sure the cast have at least a tenth the charisma of Bruce Campbell.
Hell, if they can make musicals of the Bible...

I saw EVIL DEAD in one of its early productions (more than a workshop but seemingly less than an all out professional staging) in Toronto in...I think 2003 around Halloween.
It was a cute show...very funny, and it did hold a lot of potetial. I'm glad they've kept at it!
Hey Weez, can't you see Chris Sieber in the Bruce Campbell role? Or Marc Kudish?

I agree that this is actually a pretty intriguing idea, in a very campy, cult-classic sort of way.
The last time I saw this was b4 it went to the Just 4 Laughs festival in Montreal. It is deliberatly cheesey and campy and very funny. ( yes they had to get permission from EVERYone involved w the film ) It really is Evil Dead I & II The Musical. It also helps if u know the movies to get the references (GROOVY!) Definately a HOOT!

This sounds great to me.
I hope there is a number for the girl who first turns into a zombie:
"Ace of diamonds.
Two of clubs.
Queen of hearts!
AAAEWRRGH"
this sounds soooo cool
Are you there, God (in this case, Bruce Campbell; how appropriate!)? It's me, Weez.
I'd REALLY REALLY REALLY like it if this show is still running early next year, 'cos that's when I'm most likely to get to New York again. Also, a cast recording would be just swell. Thank you so much!

Hah...this work originated in Toronto, and a few of the original cast members went to school with me. I very much regret not seeing it in taht incarnation. I know the buzz was great for it, and the one thing I heard from everyone was how amazing the special effects (aka...chopped off body parts and squirting blood) were. This could rival Inishmore as the bloodiest show in NY.

I am so thrilled this production is coming into fruition! There is a San Francisco based theatre that has been doing (nonmusical) stage productions of "Evil Dead: Live!" for the passed few years, and as unbelievable as it may sound, the material is just PERFECT for the stage. Riotously insane and such a crowd pleaser. If done right, it gets pretty messy and bloody (in the fun way)! And it sounds like the original work from Toronto (referred to below) was great.

this is sad... my greatest fear comes to the greatest thing that ever lived! sad... but cool... i think they need the thriller in it.

Now this is something I'd like to see. Evil Dead is one of my favorites in that genre.
can't you see Chris Sieber in the Bruce Campbell role?
YES!

If there were truth-in-advertising, most musicals produced today would be called EVIL DEAD. They be stinky bad poo-poo.

I am extremely excited about this. Best idea for a musical ever. Haha.

It is absolutely going to rival "Inishmore" in the blood department.
There is going to be an audience splash zone.

I love the fact that the first few rows are a splash zone. I think this musical will be awesome as long as people don't take it too seriously
Just bought tickets for the Saturday evening performance before Halloween at 11PM. Two center orchestra seats in the SPLATTER ZONE! It sounded like campy fun, and I love the original movie, so I'm taking a chance. Has there been any more "buzz" on the show?
