15 seems to be the age for it.

"I see it all. It's like a movie in my head that plays and plays. It isn't just the had things I remember. It's the whole show."

re: FOLLIES recording I'd like to hear...

I think I read in SONDHEIM & CO where someone said young people respond to FOLLIES because they see how miserable the character lives a have become and decide that that is not going to happen to them.

Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart; and you'll never walk alone.

It was not just her beauty--it was also her bitchery I admired. I wanted to be in a really bad relationship so I could demand of my lover:

"WHEN did you love me last? Was it ten years ago...or NEVER? Do you ever contemplate divorce? Or suicide? Why don't you play around...or DO you? Have you cried much lately? Does one more day with me seem insupportable? Or are you DEAD?"

I'd say you were a sick man PalJoey... if I didn't fully understand where you are coming from and secretly have the same fantasy once.

re: FOLLIES recording I'd like to hear...

Most of the 15 year old queens today are only obsessed with their Wicked and Rent, etc. They could care less about Follies.

re: FOLLIES recording I'd like to hear...

Back to the original question:

It is probably that RCA has both complete concerts recorded, so theoretically it would be possible to issue a new CD set with all the dialogue. (After all, EMI re-issued Judy's Carnegie Hall concert with all the between songs banter.)

Whether it would make a listenable album that would appeal to people beyond the "show queens" is questionable.

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

ljay889: Evidently WICKED and RENT speak to them the way FOLLIES speaks to us. Of course, FOLLIES has a helluva lot more to say than either of those two shows combined. But, to quote another Sondheim work, they "are young. They will learn." One hopes.
Cheyenne Jackson tickled me. AFTER ordering SoMMS a drink but NOT tickling him, and hanging out with Girly in his dressing room (where he DIDN'T tickle her) but BEFORE we got married. To others. And then he tweeted Boobs. He also tweeted he's good friends with some chick on "The Voice" who just happens to be good friends with Tink's ex. And I'm still married. Oh, and this just in: "Pettiness, spite, malice ....Such ugly emotions... So sad." - After Eight, talking about MEEEEEEEE!!! I'm so honored! :-)

Actually, what I love about BroadwayWorld is that the teenagers (and older people) who are obsessed by whatever show obsesses them have a place to come to and find other like-minded obsessives.

All I wanted back then was to find ONE person who loved it as much as I did. I'm happy that today's kids have BroadwayWorld, even for Wicked. (Which I'm not obsessed with but have seen twice.)

The show will always be different. My point about 15-year-olds and Follies was not that ALL 15-year-old are into Follies but that many Follies-obsessives fell in love with the show at 15.

Well, I wasn't quite fifteen; I was eleven when Follies became my favorite musical. I was taking a music class with the composer Louis Rosen at the 92nd street Y and the minute The overture/prologue started I was not in the classroom any more I was in Follies world. I could picture the ghosts and it was very haunting. I got so caught up with these people's lives, it was the first time I ever thought of characters in a musical as real people and I was amazed. The original cast has always been my favorite CD and I still haven't seen the Follies PalJoey describes. While the acting was sensational in the roundabout production most of the singing, direction, and concept was awful. And the opposite was true in the Berkshire's production. I will be seeing Follies two times at Encores! and really hope that it is the one that PalJoey describes.

PalJoey, if I may add to the quotes.... "Ben... Sally?"

Ooooh, right, jewishboy. That one always gets me.

"Hi...Girls...Ben...Sally"--and then that great Sondheim CHORD!

Louis Rosen is a very gifted composer. I bet he's a great teacher.

"Beauty can't be hindered from taking its toll."

Wonderful post, PalJoey, my go to guy for all things Follies. I was indeed 15 years old when I became obsessed with the show. I had heard a couple of songs from it on my Side By Side By Sondheim album and had to hear more. Something about it struck a chord deep within me, even at that young age. While I love the score, I think the biggest reason I love the show the most is that it has a very tenuous grasp on reality to begin with and then we see that reality shattered with the extravaganza-cum-nightmare known as Loveland.

I can't speak for anyone else on this thread but when real life pain and tension becomes too much to bear I've often wished Loveland would descend up on me. If I could work out my psychological pain with my very own follies number, I'd probably be a much more well-adjusted man.

I stumbled across that last month and enjoyed every word of it. Marti seems to have kept that youthful appearance to her judging from that popular picture of her and Kurt together at the Ann Arbor production.

What a nice interview. They all have such fond memories of the original show and speak so reverently of its creators.

Broadway Star 'MIMI HINES' is the real Star of the Follies!

If it was not for the most famous actress appearing in the Follies, Star 'Mimi Hines', there
would be no Follies on Broadway this February! Mimi Hines is what the name Star was
written for in the Heavenly Sky's! Her 'Star' shines so bright, no one can come close to
ever touching the gift she has to share with everyone going to see her in the Follies on
Broadway! I can not think of any other reason to go see the Follies next month if it was
not for 'Mimi Hines'. She is and has been a talent beyond which any words can ever express.
For all you young kids in the business, if you want to learn how to sing, act, dance, you
might learn a bit of the pure magic and talent from Mimi Hines in the Follies. Anytime she
is performing anywhere on stage is a moment frozen in time. She has an amazing gift
that can bring out emotion from the heart that no one else can ever even come close
to ever being blessed to have. When reviews are written through the years of the greatest
actors of our times, the name 'MIMI HINES' shines and will always shine the brightest! I
and many other friends can not wait for opening night at the Follies on Broadway! When
they started calling actors Star's, it's true meaning was meant for the GREAT 'MIMI HINES'!
I wish the young whipper snapper actors coming up today would stop to really learn their craft
and their lines. So many today want it all like instant coffee. You do not earn your craft over night
nor in a year. You either have something to start with and then develope or you never will.
Just maybe if they did this we would once again have the start of some of the essence and
talent of the great 'MIMI HINES'. May her light always shine bright for many more years to come.

re: FOLLIES recording I'd like to hear...

Pound for pound, I'd say Christine Baranski is probably more famous than Mimi Hines.
