And this may make me a bad theatre person, but I'd never even heard of Mimi Hines until the concert was announced. And then I got her confused with Mimi Kennedy.

My mother saw Mimi Hines take over for Barbra Streisand in Funny Girl and swore, to her dying day, "Mimi Hines was just as good as Barbra Streisand, only she married Phil Ford and didn't become famous."

I saw her do ON THE 20TH CENTURY... she was a hoot.

Oh, okay. I kind of know who she is now. She's kind of young for Hattie, isn't she?

So does anyone else think the Encore's FOLLIES opening will be drowned out by the sound of recorders clicking on?

- If it does. I will not be a happy camper.

I do not think she is necessarily young, but I did want some sort of tough broad to play Hattie. I love Shutta's and Stritch's "Broadway Baby"s because the way they sing it--and their personas--give a sense of irony to the lyrics themselves, there's a lot to be done with subtext. While I love Bernadette Peters' rendition in concert, I do not think the cute, funny take on this number could work within the context of the show.
I've never seen the show live so maybe my take is erroneous but this is one of my few concerns with the concert.
Honestly, I just can't wait to see Victor Garber, Donna Murphy, Victoria Clark, and Michael McGrath singing in unison:

"Waiting around for the girls upstairs, thank you but never again. Life was fun but oh, so intense, everything was possible and nothing made sense. Back then when one of the major events was waiting for the girls upstairs..."
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"

I didn't realize she was in her 70s, so her age seems right for the role. I'm looking so forward to the concert. It will be the first time I've heard the score live.

Ah yes. That's why I love Sondheim.

"How I planned,
What I'd wear tonight
And when should I get here,
How should I find you,
Where I'd stand,
What I'd say in case you didn't remember,
How I'd remind you..."

And this next quatrain was heartbreaking when Dorothy Collins sang it. I have high hopes for Vicki Clarke breaking my heart all over again this weekend.

Was it ever real?
Did I ever love you this much?
Did we ever feel
So happy then?

In my seventeen year (give or take) love affair with the show, I always wind up finding myself drawn to different songs in the score at different points in my life. "Too Many Mornings" is a song that I've only recently really come to love.

"Too Many Mornings" is to me the most heart-breaking song in the score (if you know the ending), and the most romantic song Sondheim has written, IMO.
PalJoey, I'm sure Clark will have us in tears when she sings her solo during this song. Though I think I'll just be sobbing when Garber and Clark sing together:
"Too many mornings
Wasted in pretending I reach for you.
How many mornings are there still to come?"
And one of my favorite lines within the song:
"How much time can we hope that there will be?
Not much time but it's time enough for me."
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"

I'm a fan of the book... I know a number of esteemed posters don't think much of it.. but to me, the book is one of the best to a Sondheim show. At least, the original broadway version. Subsequent versions are kind lack the emotional punch that I think gives FOLLIES its power.
