Fred & Ginger, the new musical biopic based on the lives of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, will begin production later this year.

Deadline reports that GRAMMY winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear have joined the creative team of the film, working with Marius de Vries and Mark Sonnenblick to recreate the couple's famous musical moments.

Tony-winning choreographer Christopher Wheeldon is now set to choreograph the dance numbers.

As previously reported, Jamie Bell and Margaret Qualley will play Fred Astair and Ginger Rogers, respectively. Jonathan Entwistle is attached to direct the film from a script by Arash Amel.

"Fred & Ginger" will tell the untold, real love story between Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, two legends both on and off screen.

Fred Astaire (May 10, 1899 – June 22, 1987) and Ginger Rogers (July 16, 1911 – April 25, 1995) were dance partners in a total of 10 films, nine of them with RKO Radio Pictures from 1933 to 1939, and one, The Barkleys of Broadway, with MGM in 1949, their only color film.

Love story?  That's the first I've heard of any such "romance" between Fred and Ginger.  This sounds like a total fiction.

Astaire and Rogers never were romantically involved. They were co-stars and dance partners on 10 films only.  Each had successful individual careers.

The press release doesn't call it a romance, they call it a love story. A platonic love story between a man and a woman is entirely legitimate, and even refreshing in a way.

'course, I wouldn't put it entirely past Hollywood to fictionalize a romance between the two of them... that's probably how the story would have been told in Fred and Ginger's time, come to think of it.

Astaire and Rogers didn't even like each other. They had a cordial working relationship, but they weren't friends or anything.
