They will be re-recording with the Broadway cast. Great news for Erin Davie!

Posted: 9/12/06 at 3:34pmThat's pathetic. They will record a show just months later, but CD's of shows like Lestat and Patti LuPone's Gypsy will neverbe released.

Well, you certainly can't ascribe some vague "Them" to everyone involved.
First of all, there's no definite news this is happening. Secondly, most shows are recorded by a wide variety of labels/studios and for widely varying budgets/reasons. They can also be held up or not recorded for any variety of reasons.

Yes, please, let's try not to personalize this. Every funding source and producer is different. So Grey Gardens having 2 recordings is not a personal slight against Lestat or any other show that never got recorded. Let's not get dramatic.
Let's just be grateful that 2 incarnations of the same show (before and after re-writes and cast changes) will exist on record. That is how it always should be in a perfect world. Enjoying the different nuances is such a treat.

Posted: 9/12/06 at 6:03pmIt makes sense to me, like I pointed out in the other Grey Gardens thread, why would they record the show before opening on Broadway? They're not sure what will change? The writers might write the most brillant song for the show, but then if the recording is already done, then nobody will hear it, except for the people seeing the show in NYC? Plus, this way, we can use the new logo instead of that hideous one on the PS Classics CD.

Posted: 9/12/06 at 6:43pmI for one am glad they recorded this version cause Sara G. is delightful, even though I don't think she was right for the part but her voice is beautiful. Can't wait to see what changes they'll make on Broadway.

I suspect that this is nothing more than a rumor. It would not be financially logical to re-record and re-release the show.
I quickly asked a friend of mine that has worked closely with the show since Playwrights, and she had never heard such a rumor.
So think it's just that - a rumor.

A cast recording isn't an award. It wasn't "selected" for the honor.
Any producer with enough money and legal clearances can record a show CD.
Repeatedly.
They could do one every week, if they felt like it.

Posted: 9/12/06 at 6:52pmI think it's a little strange that the Off-Broadway version was released, given that they're apparently making significant changes. When was the last time an Off-Broadway version of a known Broadway transfer was released? The last 2 Off-Broadway transfer musicals I can think of were Avenue Q and Spelling Bee, both of which waited for release.

Posted: 9/12/06 at 6:53pmDidn't GREY GARDENS record before it was final that they were transferring?

Hair has an Off-Broadway and Broadway recording.
You can buy both as a double CD, in fact.

I'm sure this is just a rumor, it would be a waste if they did this.
Though it's happened before, a la Brooke Shields.

But even then they didn't completely re-record, the just dubbed Shields' voice over Rosie O'Donnell and Donna Murphy. Still, an unnecessary expense, but a lot cheaper than re-doing the entire show.
Even if they had, WONDERFUL TOWN and GREASE are tried and true. GREY GARDENS is not yet a sure thing.

I also hear that some new songs are being added.
If they do re-record they should offer it to purchasers of the current one at a discount.
Or maybe they will just record the new songs??

Posted: 9/12/06 at 8:47pmmaybe they are going to re-release the show withbonus tracks, aka the new tracks and they wiull just record the new tracks. It would be like a second edition or something.
#23re: FYI Grey Gardens CD re-record
Posted: 9/12/06 at 8:51pmWell, I have the CD off iTunes. Would it be worth it to buy them both for hard copies?

Yes. The Off-Broadway CD has a wonderful booklet with some really cool info and photos in it. Get a hard copy.
I've found it very odd from the start that the Off-Broadway version was recorded when, from the moment the show opened at Playwrights (and every review stated specifically that there were major problems), the creative team knew there were going to be some hardcore changes (one specifically being the removal of Sara Gettelfinger, another being major revisions to Act I). It's not as though GREY GARDENS is going to become the next MAMMA MIA (which, oddly, never recorded the Broadway version when the show clearly was on the verge of becoming a worldwide sensation).
