Actually, it was very smart for the producers to record the show before the Broadway transfer. For one, it was probably much less expensive. Secondly, they now have something to use for marketing purposes before the show opens on Broadway.
And, I believe that the plans to record the cd happened LONG before there was a definite transfer plan. I believe (and I could be off by a week or so) that the recording sessions took place around the same time as the decision to transfer.

Posted: 9/12/06 at 11:48pmthey must have changed enough in the show for broadway that they feel it should have a new recording..hey it will be cool to be able to listen to both and see what the differences are in the off-broadway and broadway versions.

Posted: 9/13/06 at 12:04amI still don't get it. I'm sure the producers knew they wanted to transfer the show. Why not just wait to see if the transfer is finalized before recording the show, so they can use the title "Original Broadway Cast Recording." I'm sure the producers knew a couple days in advance about the transfer, more so than the public. I mean look at Billy Elliot, the producers are playing two years in advance about the transfer.

Well, we still don't know that it's happening. Anyone see a press release from Ghost Light yet? No?
Then it's all conjecture.
And Craig, it most definitely had to be cheaper. I think the standard pay for the performers/musicians on a cast album amounts to their regular work pay (overtime, one supposes, depending upon the hours involved). So, yeah, paying your actors and musicians off-Broadway scale makes it much cheaper.

I think the decision to record the Off-Broadway cast was done due to the critical acclaim for the show and to preserve the work of both lead actresses. The show was a bonified hit and those left without tickets were clamoring to hear the music. It was a great decision.
Also, I am unsure if the decision was made to transfer. Even if it was, it could always fall through in the early stages and then there would be no recording. Also, who knew if all the actors would transfer? I think it was a sound decision to record when they did.
We have yet to see if they re-record. I would be happier if they did, but can live with what I have if they do not. As Norn said, the more Grey Gardens the better. Christine and Mary Louise are divine perfection.

Posted: 9/13/06 at 12:22pmIt certainly wouldn't be the first show to get both an Off Broadway and Broadway cast recording...

Posted: 9/13/06 at 4:17pmMaybe they're just waiting to see how the new stuff is recieved on Broadway? I'm sure if the show turns out to be a hit, then it will get re-recorded, but if the new stuff is crap, then no.
