I'll be in New York in a couple of weeks and was wondering whether I should go see Falsettos or The Color Purple. I was leaning towards Falsettos but I know everyone says Cynthia Erivo is not to be missed in TCP. All opinions welcome!!

Both. Seriously, make every attempt to catch them.

My pick would be Falsettos. While Erivo is certainly a big component of what makes this production of Purple so great, you'll at least be able to catch Doyle's staging on tour next year. It's highly unlikely Falsettos will tour.

Definitely color purple... Falsettos was very disappointing on so many levels.... I think the music and style of writing are very dated and I might be the only person with that opinion on this board but you can't lose with color purple.

Color me purple (...see what I did there?)... :)
Seriously though... The Color Purple without a doubt.

Color Purple.
I;ve been going to Broadway for 60 years -- and Erivos' performance is one of the top 10 that I have ever seen. She is simply extraordinary.

I do wonder if the folks who say "You can't miss so and so's performance! It's simply unequaled" are same people who tell people who complain about understudies that they've "only paid to see the show not any particular performer." No accusations, just curious.
As someone who has flown halfway across the country to see a particular performer only to have that performer be absent... I'd almost never base a show decision solely on one actor's performance. The Color Purple has some really terrific understudies... but if you're not interested in the material to begin with... will even an excellent understudy satisfy you? Maybe? I don't know!
See what show appeals to you most.

Love both shows but Color is delivering the emotional wallop the original Falsettos delivered that this cast can't replicate. And from a vocalist standpoint Color is in a league of its own. I'll be heading back a third time to catch the latest Shug Avery - too bad you missed Heather.

I too have flown across the country to see a particular performer. Many times, the performers were as scheduled, but there have been times when the person that got me off the couch to get on that plane was not in. In my case, I was very disappointed that I missed that performer, but went to the show and enjoyed a great understudy (or, in some cases, understudies).
Both Lin and Chris Jackson were out the first time I saw Hamilton, but I went and had a phenomenal time. I ended up going back a second time and saw both -- how fortunate I felt to get that chance. Same with other shows -- principal was out, I was disappointed by that, but went anyway and enjoyed the show that was put on *that* night.
Have tickets to Color Purple in December --going back with a friend that hasn't seen it. I would be very disappointed If Cynthia was out. I will definitely miss Heather and Danielle but it is what it is, and I look toward to seeing what Jennifer and Carrie do with the roles. It is live theatre. You watch the show that is performed the night for which you bought tickets.
If I were local, I might exchange, when a performer I really wanted to see was out, but I'm not and I have to accept the risk, which I do willingly.
You can be disappointed by one thing and still enjoy the show. They are not mutually exclusive.

I haven't seen Falsettos but I consider Color Purple (and especially this production) a can't-miss. I saw it twice and I am a better person because of it.

I don't know when exactly you're going, but you should note that according to Telecharge, Erivo will be out between November 15 and 22. I was going to get tickets for when I'll be there on the 20th but wasn't sure if it was really worth it without her.

Having seen and enjoyed both, I also vote for Color Purple for Erivo's performance.
