It could be 20 or 100,000, but it's still an honor. Congrats to Fantasia and the other 20 people! Although it's not quite 20...I believe they award 6 actors and 6 actresses.

I didn't say it wasn't an honor. I'm happy for her.
I'm just wondering who the other people are, though I bet it won't be hard to predict.

Where's the list? Not on their page. Or else it's hiding very well.

Am I the only person who didn't like her? In all honesty, I didn't. Perhaps it's because the role she plays is written poorly.

It is written very poorly.
I'm hoping that we'll see Stark Sands and Hugh Dancy on this list.

The award isn't necessarily for actors making Broadway debuts. Its supposed to be in recognition of their first significant role in a major Broadway/Off Broadway production.

Thanks Michael Bennett. After I first posted that I thought I might have made a mistake, and especially after Munk's post. But I thought I remembered that it wasn't ONLY debuts.

Christian Borle
Laura Bell Bundy
Orfeh
Martha Plimpton
David Hyde Piece
All of them have had starring or featured roles, expect none of them to be on the list.

You know what, I did just check out the website and it does say it is for a debut performance on or off Broadway. But, Anika Noni Rose and Cheyenne Jackson won for Caroline or Change and All Shook up respectively, after Rose appeared in Footloose on Broadway and Jackson appeared in Aida and Millie.

But it's almost ALWAYS given to people making their Broadway debuts.
I would expect to see (some more likely than others:)
Xanthe Elbrick, Coram Boy
Harry Lennix, Radio Golf
James A. Williams, Radio Golf
Hugh Dancy, Journey's End
Stark Sands, Journey's End
Eve Best, A Moon for the Misbegotten
Colm Meaney, A Moon for the Misbegotten
Sebastian Stan, Talk Radio
Gavin Lee, Mary Poppins
Michael Sheen, Frost/Nixon
Erin Davie, Grey Gardens
Bobby Steggart, 110 In the Shade
Natalie Cortez, A Chorus Line
Mara Davi, A Chorus Line
Angel Desai, Company
Elizabeth Stanley, Company
Adam Jacobs, Les Miserables
Jay Johnson, The Two and Only
Tom Everett Scott, The Little Dog Laughed
Johnny Galecki, The Little Dog Laughed
Mary Birdsong, Fame Becomes Me
Nicole Parker, Fame Becomes Me
Bill Nighy, The Vertical Hour
and that's just Broadway shows. I'm not going through all the off-Broadway.

Yeah those are some good ones Munk. Apparently they only give it to 6 actors and 6 actresses every year with an additional special award if felt necessary. From your list I would guess:
Xanthe Elbrick, Coram Boy
Hugh Dancy, Journey's End
Stark Sands, Journey's End
Eve Best, A Moon for the Misbegotten
Gavin Lee, Mary Poppins
Michael Sheen, Frost/Nixon
Erin Davie, Grey Gardens

Jay Johnson, The Two and Only
EDIT: Plus Fantasia of course.

I would be shocked to see Michael Sheen on the list, as he starred in the revival of AMADEUS a few years ago. Personally, I thought he was rather wonderful in that and was surprised when he wasn't nommed for a Tony (co-star David Suchet was nommed).

Great for her. I predicted she'd win this and she'll likely win the Drama Desk Award for next year. That's pretty good considering a few short months ago we had to listen to people constantly saying "how can she play someone else when she couldn't even play herself". Thank goodness no more of that, this sort of seals the deal
rave reviews.......check
huge box office bump......check
now awards.......check
I think her broadway run has been pretty much an all around success.

Wow, this is kind of surprising, if a bit disappointing. If the latest Celie replacement had not been an American Idol winner, would that actress be given a Theatre World Award? I saw Fantasia last week after have seen both LaChanze and Jeannette Bayardelle, and Bayardelle was leagues ahead of Fantasia.
There are replacements in Broadway shows every year, many of them making their Broadway debuts and beaming with talent. Most of them are unknowns and they'll be lucky if they ever get a chance at award recognition. It's quite obvious that Fantasia is getting this honor because she is a name, and I find that disappointing as Broadway has always been about making a name for yourself, proving yourself, getting noticed.
Well, regardless, congratulations to Fantasia on her Theatre World Award.
