Fantasia to Announce Color Purple Stint on Idol Tonight- Page 2

I'm not suprised in the least that Fantasia delivered a stellar "I'm Here." If anything, the girl knows how to sell a number (especially an emotional ballad.) Vocally, I think this score is well within her reach.

The thing that I have concerns about in regards to her casting is the acting and age progression Celie requires. Even if Fantasia turns out to be one hell of an actress (which she very well could be,) I don't think she'll be able to believably make the transition from teenager to elderly woman.

Regardless, I wish her all the best and hope (for both her sake and that of the show) that she turns out to be a first rate Celie. I hope to be pleasently suprised!

They already have Fantasia's picture on The Color Purple website....and she's a blonde.

I admit I was very skeptical and negative about this news at first, but I've decided to give her a chance. I'll probably even go back and see the show again. Maybe.

She's going to rehearse for three whole months and will have a talented cast around her to cover all her flaws. With all the rehearsal time and acting coaching she's getting there won't be any valid excuse for a less than stellar opening night.

Oh, she announced it and she's singing.
Ewww! The Color Purple meets R&B. I hope to god she doesn't sing it like that in the show.

Her "I'm Here" is not bad--- they changed the key a bit for her, but she CAN belt.

The end was a little spotty--- I just cant see her not destroying her voice playing Celie 7-8 times a week.

All you naysayers, if you've watched American Idol, well you best be changin' your tune. That voice, along with the light in her eye, you can't deny she will take Celie to new, and unbelievable places.

She was ok. I feel she over did the song. She should try singing it in the key it was supposed to be sung in. Good luck Oprah!! Your gonna need it.

I"m not so worried about the singing. Broadway can take that, she is good. It's her acting I'm worried about. I hope she can really get into the character of Celie and feel the emotions of the role.

Just watching it for a second time.... Her "I'm Here" was VERY good !!

Still worry about her voice holding up, however.

I can see her taking the Weds Mat off, but doing both shows on Saturday.

Did you not see her? She was drowning in Celie. She was in tears by the end of it. She wasn't just selling the song, she was completely invested in the character. What Fantasia did was acting, organic, based in reality. One hundred times more interesting and genuine than the hand flailing, over the top crap being shoved onto Broadway now.

I loved the Color Purple up until this point.. Stunt casting someone whose voice is not up to the role and c'mon people...can we see Fantasia being that good in the role???? HELL NO!

She performed almost every number like that when she was on AI. Nothing really different. Unless you want to say she's been performing in that character for years!

Worst case of stunt casting ever! I love this show and Fantasia will not even begin to do this multi-faceted role justice.

She didn't really impress me. It wasn't that bad, it just wasn't up to par with any of the ladies who have played Celie on b'way. Her acting wasn't that wonderful either. Even if she is feeling the song, she has to emote it with her face.

^I have a question for you? Do you put these same limitations on your own abilities? If not, why would you put limitations on someone else?

If you don't like her, then just stay at home or go see another play. I am going to reserve my judgment until after I see her performance in the play.
