A mostly interesting read....seems she gets the short end of the stick more often than not.
...and I'm one of the few who actually "got" her Les Miz performance.
great interview, thanks
great interview and i too really enjoyed her fantine.
It's quite true that she is one of those performers 10 people love more than 100 people like.
I for one find her to be a thrilling performer even if I've never had the priviledge to see her live, but her music truly touches me. I also love reading/watching interviews with her, she tends to be very humble and straight-forward.
This really was an interesting interview. Thank you for posting.
I LOVED her performance in Les Mis - I felt for the first time the performance was true to the role. After all, getting molested and then singing pretty isn't natural.

Most of the characters in Les Miz go through hell, but they still don't sound like it.
Does Daphne always sound this self-centered in interviews? There's being confident in your own unique stylings, and then there's "I can do a role unlike any other. If you don't get me, too bad."
I saw her in Jack Goes Boating on Saturday, and she was fantastic. I should also add that she looked damn sexy!
Did you see her in Anna in the Tropics.... she got me all hot and bothered!

Self-centered?
Since when is doing what you believe in "self-centered"????
Since when is following your own vision as long as it doesn't hurt others, "self-centered"???
I call it being true to YOURSELF!
Being true to yourself is great. It really is. Playing a role solely for yourself and not for the people watching you? That's just strange.
I hope whenever she plays Christine Daae or Gaston -- two roles I'd expect her to play as well as she did Fantine -- that she's true to herself. Because, kids, that's all that matters.
(I didn't find the interview so bad until that part. Although she's often had this bad-girl image that works with some things, less so with others.)
Good interview...her interviews are usually pretty interesting reads. One thing that bugged me, though:
The main problem with the movie is that Chris Columbus was not the right person for the job.
OK--whatever your point of view on that (I myself go back and forth every time I think about it) and however much you sympathize with Daphne regarding the movie casting (I do, I guess), how exactly can she make such a definite claim only a few sentences after re-affirming that she's only ever seen a few minutes of the film? She's usually seems to be such a grounded person who's not quick to make rash judgements, so her saying that threw me a little.

She stated complete truth there.
Columbus would have been the LAST person on my list to direct the film.

That's fine, and there are days when I'd agree with you...but my point is, we've seen the entire film. Daphne, by her own admission (in the same interview), has not even seen most of it. Again, I'm mostly suprised by the comment because of what a rational person Daphne is most of the time...I'm thrilled that she's always so honest about her feelings on the film, but that doesn't seem like something she'd typically come out and say without having seen the whole thing. Oh well.
I don't think you necessarily need to have seen the film to know that Columbus' concept was wrong. She even goes on to say WHY she believes he was the wrong person for the movie. Also, we've seen the final product and can't really judge her comment because it's so true.
It'd be nice if the link was for the first page, instead of the third...
That is a really good interview. I agree with her a lot. I like how she says how she really feels about the movie. Yes, she would have wanted to be in it but she is not pulling a JHoliday and being nasty. She seems like a very good person, but she always gives great interviews.
She seems to be a bit bitter about not being in the movie...
Lizzie, I think you're misinterpreting the statment "I would deliver a true Fantine for me." I think what she means by that is not that she was doing the role only for herself, but that her Fantine would be as good an interpretation as she was capable of.
The best part: "With Madonna in the lexicon, I simply wanted to be a better actress than she was!"
Isn't everyone a better actress than Madonna?
"Being true to yourself is great. It really is. Playing a role solely for yourself and not for the people watching you? That's just strange."
Ummmmm. Somehow. I have a tiny little hunch that you've missed the point. Would it be a correct assumption to say you're not an actress? Because truthfully, the first thing on an actor's mind when approaching probably should never be "Hmm, what would the audience like?" It's about getting into the mind, body, voice, soul of the character. Daphne was fully committed to what SHE, the ARTIST saw as Fantine, which may have been very different from what other saw as Fantine. There was nothing wrong with it, as it didn't clash with the text or the story. It was her creation, and it made sense, so why would she compromise her artistry because some audience members with narrow minds or different tastes didn't get what she was doing?
There's nothing self-centered about the interview.
that was a fantastic interview. much props to daphne for her honesty.

Not usually, although she does have the bad-ass thing going on. I think the bad reviews probably got under her skin at first.
As for her being bitter about the Rent movie, she probably was pretty upset. I'd be upset if almost all my old friends were working on a project that was really special to me and I was one of the few left out, even if she didn't particularly want to be in it.

I didn't get that either, particularly because she said a few lines earlier that "if Chris wanted me to do it, I would have"
