So, because Oprah has power (money) and you like Fantasia... That's why?
With the fact they they won't let some new shows, that were nominated, perform (Legally Blonde), I just find it a tad bit wrong.
I'm not saying Fantasia isn't talented or putting down her performance at all, it's just that this sort of thing hasn't really happened before at the Tony's.

But La Jolla is in San Diego, not L.A.
Anika Noni Rose was supposed to be in the TV film of THE WIZ with Brian Stokes Mitchel and Sherie Rene Scott. That didn't happen, so she moved on. I'm quite glad Nikki M. James will be doing the revival, she's quite a talented lady.

I get the feeling that this is a performance by Fantasia, not Fantasia as Celie. To me it's the same thing as having other celebrity guests perform on the show. Her "I'm Here" is sort of like an r + b single anyway, and way different than the way she sings it in the show. Legally Blonde performing would have been unfair to the other shows that weren't nominated. This is Fantasia performing alone, not in costume, from an uneligible show.

No, La Jolla is in San Diego not L.A. It played the La Jolla Playhouse in SAN DIEGO.
They are hoping that by next summer Nikki M. James and the rest of the cast's schedule will be clear so they can do The WIZ in San Fransisco. The only problem is Tittus who is doing The Little Mermaid but they are hoping that he can take a break to do it.

Maybe the Tony Management Committee wants Fantasia to perform because she's lighting up Broadway in a way that will be remembered for years. She's not only getting rave critical reviews, but audience members are going wild for her, as observed by this recent article about the show: "In a lifetime of theater-going, I have never heard such an ovation as what greeted Fantasia Barrino at the curtain call of "The Color Purple" on May 23."
Those of you upset at the fact she's performing can switch the channel when she comes on.
Amazing Fantasia

"By the time Celie finds salvation with the bombastic ballad "I'm Here", you'll be glad Fantasia is...but you'll also wish she'd go back to making pop music"
Yea, great reviews.
I'm not mad that she's performing, I'm just asking,"Why"?

theatrediva, I love how you keep trying to push the idea that Fantasia received poor reviews. Other than the EW one you've quoted from twice now--and really, EW is hopeless when it comes to musicals--she received across the board raves. If you are truly in the dark about this, go here and start reading, https://forum.broadwayworld.com/readmessage.cfm?page=6&thread=931645&boardname=bway
Then come back and tell us about Fantasia's bad reviews.

Diva,
Have to agree with the others here (although I do agree with YOU that its very weird that she is performing)---
Its very easy to find one or two negative "snips" out of all of the Fantasia reviews. Her reviews were basically across the board raves, and deservedly so. As far as her "I'm Here" (and her Celie, as a whole), I would put it in my Top 5 theatre moments this year that are "not-to-be-missed".

Did you even read what I posted? Did I say it was true?
I called it harsh.
The point I'm trying to make is I think it's unfair to let Fantasia perform because she's a popular AI star when folks that were nominated aren't able to perform. It has nothing to do with Fantasia's abilities.

The situation is totally different. First of all, Color Purple is not eligible this year. Second, she will not be singing as Celie. This will be a solo performace of her r + b version of I'm Here (most likely, anyway).

So, they are taking time away from a show rewarding Broadway talent so that a first timer who had a following due to a popular TV show can perform, instead of letting folks finish their acceptance speeches or other folks who ARE nominated can't perform?
Just doesn't make sense.
It's like having someone perform at the Oscars just because.

Oh, just wanted to throw something into the hat....
Asked yesterday about the Jennifer Hudson rumor, (in regards to Hudson taking over for Fantasia) and was told that it was totally untrue. Yes, she has seen the show (hence, where the rumor was started, most likely)
The latest rumor was Jordin Sparks- (who, has also seen the show recently)
and so on, and so on......

Who could Jordin possibly be? She's like 17.

Celie---- Fantasia is only 23, I believe--- not THAT much of a difference.. I am not really saying that I could see Sparks doing it, I am just saying that I dont think her age would matter here.

Theatrediva- give it up. We all know that Fantasia isnt performing because she is a product of a TV show - they would have gotten the others you mentioned. She is performing because she deserves to be - she is one of the rare great live performers of the last 20 years or so. She is electric live.
End of story.

Celie ages though in the show. She doesn't stay 23. Jordin is a bit too young.

Testing (I know we've gone sorta off topic...LOL) but when I was at CP a few weeks ago the usher mentioned that LaChanze was interested in coming back....look at all these rumors...LOL!
And theatrediva, you mentioned "It's like having someone perform at the Oscars just because"....remember Beyonce sung all the nominated songs at the Oscars....

Well, I do think she's performing cause she's famous. I don't think there's anything wrong with it, though. The more performances the better.

I am suspecting that she has been asked to sing because they must have something planned for various people to sing songs from past shows. She's known from AI, her record sales have been good and she is now on Broadway, so it makes sense to have her on. If they advertise the show right, some of her fans that may not know she is even in the show may tune in to see her.

Beyonce' was singing nominated songs. Is Fantasia?
And Dream, we all know how you feel about Fantasia. Good for you. Relax.
"She is performing because she deserves to be"
No, the folks who are nominated this year deserve that chance. Fantasia has her future all set for her.
